HMC engines are GOATs, it is a known fact. Even their engineers implicitly guarantee the engines to 200k miles when properly maitained.

My 2003 TL-S is now past 200k. It uses no oil at ALL, by that I mean oil level stays at the same level between 10k oil changes, it still pulls like a train in VTEC and will roast the tires for 60 feet from the stop.

It is a shame that Honda discontinued their sports cars, I hope they will reconsider that. Every "fast" honda was phenomenal and earned the cult status. Integra type R, NSX, S2000, B16 Sis.

But, if Porsche built the engines as reliable as HMCs this forum would not exist and Porsche would be out of business. As per mileage numbers from this board, most people would never have to replace their Porsche in their lifetime.

^^^ Agreed.

Too bad Porsche didn't partner with Honda instead of Toyota for the M96.

I don't think Toyota was consulted for the engine development, they were hired to make the 996 program more efficient and lest costly. The engine and it's development is all Porsche.

Congrats. I'll hit 111111 later this year. Then my motor will immediately implode

I'm only about 1/2 way there, so I still watch for 44444, 55555, etc.
I have great confidence in the M96 engine and I don't worry about catastrophic failures.

That's mixed driving. On level areas of the freeway, if I very gently feather the gas all the time (which I never do) I can get about 28 mpg. On the track, it still averages about 14 mpg.

My car, highway MPG at 75MPH. Long term MPG gauge BTW. I broke 30MPG on one long trip to Biosphere 2, mostly because that road is straight, empty and has low speed limit. 996 gets great mileage because it is light and aerodynaic. Keep the tires pumped up, run techron through the tank every 5k miles, and change your filters often. On the highway use cruise control.

On average I use about five tanks of gas per month in the car right now. So give or take 1,500-2,000 miles per month. Car likes being driven and is 100% usable in the role of a Honda daily driver.

Good stuff! I wondered what sort of mileage others have been getting under various conditions (hwy, city, mixed, track). Worthy of a thread, I think.

I rarely see the freeway. I'm lucky enough to live on the coast but work inland. Rancho bernardo. Lots of twisties along the way. Mike I get to go through rancho sante fe daily. Lucky me. I see 17 mpg. I am guilty of a lead foot.

I'm getting 20-21mpg combined during the winter. 2-3 minute warm up times idling in the morning and evening. My commute is approx. 30 minutes mixed between highway and town.

In the Fall, I was getting 25-26mpg on the same commute. Warm up times were approx. 30 seconds - 1 minute.

Looking forward to breaking the 90k mile mark in the next few months...

If you're not getting 14mpg or below, you're not driving it hard enough.

Ah, sounds like a great drive. I love to drive through Rancho Santa Fe {for those in other areas of the country, RSF is the most expensive area of San Diego county, consisting of massive sprawling mansion complexes on huge estates. See below for aerial image of a typical RSF bungalow} .

I used to worry when drove through RSF in my Hyundai, that they'd call the cops (or more likely, private security), figuring it must be something like Treyvon on a Skittles run.

Now, I can breeze through with no worries. Since it's a 996, they just assume I'm the gardener or something.
