Curious about a few things, sorry if these are dumb questions new to the Porsche world.

1- I see people talking about MKI and MKII, what are the differences, I am thinking 99-01 & 02-04.

2- It seems like there are different style 996 side skirts/rocker moldings. Wondering if different year 996 had different skirts or if there were different skirts available for the same year.

I am picking up a 996 tomorrow and I am sure I will have many more questions.

Also, the mkII got the updated 3.6L engine along with the slightly updated interior (gauges, cupholders, glove box).

The factory options are the mkI aero kit/GT3 side skirts



And the mkII aero kit



There are also a handful of aftermarket options for side skirts/bumpers.
I am picking up a 996 tomorrow and I am sure I will have many more questions.

Nice comparison pics. Your Mk1 example looks like it's got the OEM chin spoiler installed as well, painted yellow to match the bumper.

seller of my car said the aerokit is by Techart (front lip, side skirts, rear bumper winglets and wing).

I like your Techart wing! I've got the OEM version that was evidently designed to clear the cab top. Seems small to really do anything and a little too understated for me. Does Techart still sell that unit?

Yea I have seen that little rear spoiler on eBay that attaches to the OEM rear deck-lid. Some are made with CF too and was wondering about that Mod myself. Right now, I just have the MKI GT3 front bumper, side-skirts and CF rear-winglets, and no GT3 taco-wing, Hmmm...

Do you have a pic of the CF rear winglets? Not sure what those are.

Here is another MK1 aero version. My skirts are TechArt but flat. I believe this aero kit came on my car from the factory in 99.

Basically it's just the standard OEM winglets that are attached to the bottom rear of the bumper. It just happens that mine are made of real CF (very light and great fit too) and I got them from a Rennlister here. Attached is a picture of the right side winglet unpainted but hard to see it's CF though because my car is dark blue and CF weaves blend-in pretty nicely...

1999-2001 = MkI = 996.1
2002-2004 = MkII = 996.2

996.2 had:

• Larger 3.6L 'Variocam Plus' engine, 315 HP
• Turbo-stye headlights
• Revised front bumper to reduce lift
• Minor changes to suspension, wheels
• Interior changes including different finish on dash/*****/console that didn't chip so easily
• Painted rear bumperettes
• Revised rear tail lights

I think the three-spoke steering wheel also became standard...

I don't think I've ever seen those before. How functional are the supposed to be?

Regarding those aerokit winglets, I believe they should be somewhat functional as part of the overall GT3 bodykit, front bumper and sideskirts because Porsche designed them specifically for the MKI cars, right? I like the overall look and will take any help I can get to make our narrow-body MKI look wider from the rear ha ha ha. .. Cheers,

The GT side trim parts, according to a couple of parts sites, "emphasize the powerful rear styling of the 911."

I have not been able to determine if they have any aerodynamic effect or any purpose beyond eliminating nearly $400 of your money. Per side!

My insurance adjuster was familiar with these parts and said that they are attached to the car with adhesive. If they really are just stuck onto the car, it seems unlikely that they have any significant aerodynamic effect...

The mk1 rear "winglets" is known as the rear GT trim and there are mixed feelings regarding the aesthetics. It doesnt really play any pivotal role in terms of aerodynamics. Personally I feel it balances out the car and gives the mk1 rear bumper more weight to match the Sideskirts and front bumper. I might be upgrading my rear soon and might have a set.
