Default Engine Is Out! Time for Cleaning.

Took a break from T-Day stuff to get engine out. I dropped it where I could just roll it a few feet for cleaning outside. Any suggestions other than the usual? This project proves that dropping the engine and trans is not a hard DIY if you just take your time. If I can do it, anyone can.

KK, what was the hardest part? Did you use a lift or just jack stands?

Now that it's out, why not just trade it for a GT3 engine, so you don't have to worry about it all the time? You'll probably get a decent value for yours, and it looks like you can get a used GT3 engine on Ebay for 14k. You're probably only 4-5k away from having arguably the best engine that Porsche has made in a long long time.

Nothing is really hard. I used jack stands, ATV jack, trans jack.

why not just trade it for a GT3 engine,
I wish it were an easy swap. It would be worth considering.

The paronia on this forum is going to cause me to replace many parts as PM while engines out even though they are not even failing. The list (cost) never ends for these cars. All this at @58,000 miles sucks.

If I had to take the engine out, i'd be changing out every belt and cooling hose….along with the timing chain guides, but that's me.

I guess it depends on the mileage, but i'm extra nervous when the car goes over 100k.

Much respect, brother.
When mine drops out, every pump/hose/assembly/seal/gasket/bearing is getting replaced.

I actually removed the AOS and coolant tank first before the drop just to see how hard it is. Its such a PITA on the 02+ that I recommend anyone drop the engine to change it.

Im also changing some coolant hoses, water pump, T-stat, coolant tank, oil fill tube, and a few other things. Two of the vario cam solenoid cover seals were leaking a little so Im changing all 4. Their only $11.50 each, so may as well change them. Im sure other guys have noticed theirs leaking when they change the plugs. Photo courtesy Pelican.

I dont think Im going to change the chain guides because I have not seen any brown bits in the filter or sump cover. Mileage is probably too low for guide wear.

Whats depressing is that the coolant tank and oil fill tube look new but thanks to this forum, Im sure the tank would start leaking and the tube would break soon if not changed while engines out. The water pump has a very small amount of bearing play but feels smooth. Im sure it would self destruct as well if I dont replace it now.

It would be really great if you could time all these things at once, say at @60,000 miles. Unfortunately it was only @1000 miles ago I had the trans out for IMSB, RMS, clutch, flywheel, etc. Wish I would have waited and done it all at the same time.

Oh and BTW, my car easily passed the PPI by Hanz and the RAC crew over a year ago. The car was an "8" out of a "10". Every 996 purchase should come with a free complete tool set, lift, shop, and service manual.

I have a big problem. The cover over the mirror on passenger side visor broke off. Guess engine drop is now on the schedule here, too.

You really are Krazy . Quote 'Thats actually funny because the interior has been the only thing that hasnt been a problem'. The next BIG problem is going to be your wife. The 'money pit' is certainly not an under statement on her part.
Buy some ear plugs. You are going to need them.

Nice work. Every time I see pics of an engine drop ot reminds me of my own project. Since you are replacing a bunch of parts that are still good, instead of throwing them out, can I have them?
