Default Sunroof rattles

Hi all,
My 2000 Carrera 2 has a sunroof rattle. When it is open, it rattles around so much that I cannot stand it. Cannot drive with it open at all. Took it to Momentum Porsche in Houston and they want $400 just to quote a repair.
They say they must first remove the headliner, at the cost of 3 hours labor, to quote a fix. What do you think about that? Who else should be able to diagnose a problem like this? Thanks in advance for the adult replies.

Mine is the same way. I don't even open it anymore. I have had my dealer repair it several times and the rattles always come back. $400 seems a bit steep for a quote. My repairs cost less than that in total.

I had the same problem in my 996.

Call your local dealership and ask them to recommend a body shop with Porsche experience. The body shop should be able to fix it quickly and relatively cheaply -- this is not the kind of work you need the dealership to handle. If it's like mine, it just needs adjustment, not replacement.

It was so quick and easy that they didn't even charge me for the fix (but I was paying for other work...)

Same here...seems it has always rattled when full open and on rough pavement. Closed it makes no rattle. If I want it open I put it about halfway to 3/4 and that seems to minimize any rattling. On the Interstate at speed all the other wonderful Porsche noise seems to drown out any rattling. Drive more on the Interstate!

This is why I check several forums daily! Just read the TSB 6028 and indeed After checking I am missing the protective strip. $43 from Pelican- hoping this is the cause and fix of my rattle when the sun roof is open. Thx fellas.

That is for 2001, I have a 2000 coupe. At least I know I am not alone here with this nightmare.

After living with the noise for a couple of years, I finally got pissed off enough to try the DIY to tighten things up. It was a piece of cake to find and fix the issues. One of the tension rods had slipped out and a couple pieces of padding took care of all the various noises. It was really quite a simple task as all of the trim comes off with a $2 trim removal tool from Harbor Freight. A firm plastic putty knife will do the trick as well.

Please elaborate on your fix! How did you access the area needing attention? Headliner removal???

I looked around and found spots that appeared to have wear from rubbing and used self stick, felt pads that I purchased at the Depot for a couple of bucks. In addition, one of the rods had come loose as the following thread addresses:

It seriously took less than an hour to get rid of the noises that annoyed the living crap out of me!!

The protective strip as per TSB 6028 came today. On the top of the rubber piece the rubber is curved. Can someone who has one tell me which direction (toward front or rear) the curve faces? Thx for replies.
