A mechanic recommending that an owner not replace a wear item because it might CAUSE a problem? I haven't heard that one before.

I suppose that replacing your brake pads could conceivably cause issues. I recommend that those should never be changed. Same with the water pump and AOS.

Hell, I'm pretty sure that you could introduce problems if you fill up at the wrong gas station. I recommend just towing your car everywhere. It's safer - and it also ensures that the price per mile (the approx. purchase price divided by 32K miles) stays above 2 bucks. This is called the KK factor...it's a metric employed by certain Porsche owners and other purchasers of high-end autos to ensure that one does not accidentally enjoy owning their car.

The truth is the decision regarding whether or not to do the IMS upgrade is best made after educating yourself thoroughly on the subject, probably by doing a search on this forum followed by lots and lots of reading. I would personally never tell someone to ignore the issue.
I was looking at a Mini Cooper s as second car ... Large numbers if those toast their engines due to plastic chain tensioner that fails around 40k ......wow ... How can problem like that go unaddressed for so long by BMW on a high volume car. ....

This is mass hysteria along the same lines as the IXS is to the 996 and posts like this doesn't help.

There's also the argument that BMW has been using plastic water pump impellers for awhile now which also fail and can cause catastrophic consequences.

There's a reason why they do certain things that not everyone understands. There's also QA issues that can creep on on bad batches. It does happen from time to time and unless a car manufacturer never outsources any of their assemblies/sub-assemblies, it is hard to control, especially at those volume levels.

Did somebody had any issue with LN ENGENIEERING RETROFIT ? DOBLE ROW ECT?
The dual row retrofit has zero failures so far. Ask your expert mechanic to explain that.
