Default Changing front left indicator bulb...

Hi All,

Sorry for posting these silly questions, but being a mechanic is not on the top 5 list of things I do so thought I'd get some pointers here.

I need to change the indicator bulb on the front left side. I have Googled and checked Youtube on how to remove the light module BUT it seems like all are for the versions without the silver headlamp cleaning spray thingy which mine has so I'm thinking it may be a little more tricky than the version without the nozzle spray thingy?

Also, do I need a specific brand or is this just a generic standard type of fitting / size? There is a VW, Audi, Skoda dealer 100 meters from where I live and was wondering if I could get a bulb from them so if any one has the European bulb coding/type number would be great as I'm not sure US part numbers are the same.

Cheerio,

No difference. The headlight module pulls right out once disengaged by the hex socket tool.

The bulb should be a std size one, listed in the owner's manual.

Thanks Ahsai for your input .

Anyone on the type of bulb?

I know it's all in the manual and all but would like to know if I could use a different brand (like whatever VW, Audi or Skoda uses) to save me a 20 min drive to Porsche in Bern and without having been fined up by the cops getting there

Yes - headlight washer just connects to a pipe that is routed to the housing inside the wing. When you pull out and replace the entire headlight assembly it might take a couple of trys to get the electrical connector to seat properly - but the washer tune will then also be aligned and is not a problem.

My indicator bulb was out - or so I thought - tuned out to be a back contact in the bulb socket. The spring contact in the socket gets weak over time - you can bend it out a little with a small screw driver to fix that problem (if it turns out your bulb was OK as mine was),

There is a better description of that if you search here ....

I just got bulb at auto parts store -it is not porsche specific - they should be able to look it up. Forgot the part number. (or look for part number on Pelican/Rock Auto etc.)

look in the manual for the removal procedure. You should find this tool in your tool kit.

The bulb is BAU15s, 21W, available in any generic auto parts store.

UPDATE: Went to the VW/Skoda/Audi/Seat dealer and got the bulb as well as a parking bulb that had folded as well.

Took less than 5 min to change both and found it ultra easy to pop up the whole module and to reinsert it again. Cost me less than USD 10.00 and got to learn stuff about my 996 :-) Oh, and added 500 ml of oil as well while at it ;-)

Spring is here which means the mountain roads are now opening up and in turn means I get to do some fun (but safe) driving. Did the Jaunpass between Bern and Fribourg today which is very close to where I live so the local pre alps really.

I can't get enough of driving the 996 tbh and I love every single second of it even though I do get worried at times (different sounds, smells, indicators etc that comes on and then goes off). Always find an excuse to drive 10 min extra which my other half can't seem to understand

And in your parts of the world?

So, it wasn't the bulb after all, but rather the fixture:

And close up:

I first tried to scrape of the plastic that covered the actual contact point but made no difference. Bought a new fixture from an online supplier and all is now working top notch

Ditto, my 2001 996TT had the same issue with the fitment i.e. The back contact just needed to be bent out a little.
