If everyone else was getting 14-16 miles per gallon in town.....I would just accept the fact that Porsche, like most manufacturers, publishes numbers better than reality.

Your mileage is normal. If you milk the cruise control your mileage can get better but your life would be duller.

My Viper ACR would constantly net mileage around 27mpg on the highway and peaked at 30mpg. I know it's mostly gearing for that kind of mileage, but the 3.4-3.6 should come close for mundane driving.

A non-GT2/3/turbo 996 is not a high performance sports car. It's a good GT car, not a pure track-rat. So MPG matters.

LOL!

In general, people who own and drive their cars frequently do care about mpg. When I first picked up my Murci and found out that it would get 10mpg highway, I was irritated because my Viper would net nearly triple the mpg, and even my H1 would get better mpg (sold both for Lambo). It didn't stop me from putting a ton of miles on the car, but I did notice the fuel bills and I would find myself driving the 996 on long drives over the Lambo.

Guess I have low standards.

At what point do you start caring? 10 mpg? 5 mpg? Fact is it does matter.

We're not saying mpg is priority, we're saying it is a factor. A car that gets great performance out of less fuel is to be acknowledged. I'm sure most people who take their cars on longer races would agree too.

We're just wondering what the car is capable of. It's pretty impressive if it can almost match an economy car (from the same model years) even if you are babying it.

But presumably you buy a vehicle with the knowledge that it will perform within a certain range of values and only if there is a significant change in the norm is there something to be concerned about.

I have had my 996 for about 15k miles and it has never once gone under 20mpg no matter how I drive it. The best I ever got was just under 27 mpg.

It is really rare to see the low fuel light come on with less than 300 miles on the tank.
I usually look for gas without ethanol in it. Not sure if that makes a big difference or not.

I get around 16 mpg, 10 miles highway, ca. 4 miles city streets with traffic lights. Never gone over 17 mpg. Tank lasts ca. 240-250 miles. 2004 C2.

Agree with sjfehr! The vast majority of my driving is in town. I have a Tip and drive it 100% in manual mode. I average about 13.5 mpg.

If I was concerned about mileage and my kids were old enough to sit in the front, I'd sell the 996 and buy the new Corvette which gets 29 mpg on the highway in econ mode. ;-)

Dr. Brain,
That is exactly what I am experiencing. Sounds like mileage varies greatly between all of us.

Thanks,
Ray

Not that I care but my last tank was roughly 18 mpg with the 50/50 mix of interstate and stoplight-intensive city streets. Mostly no shifting below 3000 rpm's and several forays above 5000 during each drive.
