Guys, come on, it's a plain jane '99. Coupe, tip, it's got a plastic dash fer christsake! This is where the market's at right now, deal with it.
He's right. The NA 996 model is so beaten up right now its depressing (unless your buying). On the other hand, it will cause many potential buyers to move on to a TT or 997. If you own a NA 996, better just keep it or be prepared to take a hit worse than the dot.com stockholders in the 90's.

Well, yes, that's my point completely.... Someone bought what appears to be a solid 911, albeit a lower end model, for only $14k. Typically, at that price level there are either 250k miles on the odo, or there is some sort of major flaw.

be prepared to take a hit worse than the dot.com stockholders in the 90's.
??? If something that isn't worth a whole lot to start with drops in value, it's impossible to have a huge loss.

Or it's someone that was originally shopping for a used Accord v6 coupe and came upon a great bang for the buck "real" sports car.

I am in the auto wholesale business and specialize in Porsches. Manual transmission 911's are worth more than their tiptronic counterpart every time, no exceptions. In 964's and 993's, the tiptronic can hurt the value up to $5k, and on 996's and 997's the tips are generally worth $2k -$3k less than what the same car with a stick is worth.

The only exception would be the Porsche Cayenne (which came in manual), and one could debate that a base Boxster in a tip is worth just as much as the 5spd.

You are correct about cars like late model Honda Accords, Carmys, Civics, etc (read: regular cars), they are worth less in manual trim because the majority of buyers do not fancy a manual transmission.

According to Edmunds.com, the number of manual transmission cars sold in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2012 nearly doubled to 6.5%, the highest number sold since 2006, which is a depressingly low number.

While there are plenty of car enthusiasts who prefer standard transmissions (yours truly included), 95% of Americans prefer automatics; thus, I don't agree that a 996 with a stick is going to fetch an enormous premium over a Tip.

Cars that sell for a higher price - manual or auto - are the result of sellers who are willing to wait for the right buyer.

Right now, 996 sellers are seeing the car values drop and are dumping the cars before the prices get worse. Unfortunately, this only exacerbates the 996's plummeting depreciation...as the prices drop, more sellers will be motivated to dump their cars, which will drive down the prices, which will motivate still more people to sell their cars...and so on.

Agreed. Porsche 996 Turbos are one of the best values in the used Porsche market. You could get a well sorted 2001 with some miles in the mid 30's, and IMHO these cars will hold their values in the low 30's upper 20's for a while, even with higher miles.

Hows it look in the wholesale / auction business for the NA 996? Is it as bad as it seems or just temporary?

The 2002 - 2004 996's along with the C4S are holding pretty strong, but it seems as if the floor has fallen out on 1999 to 2001's unless they have exceptionally low miles. With early 997's dropping in value, I can not see C2 / C4 996's going up anytime soon if ever. The Porsche 996.2 is a tremendous value for the used sports car market in the $25k range, high mileage examples are available in the high teens.

Here are some recent numbers in case you wanted to see (all data is for C2 coupe), keep in mind some of these cars may be salvage, or sold "red light as is", or just plain old pieces of garbage. I sorted it lowest mileage on top, to highest mileage on bottom.

I wonder what loon bought the 45k Silver 996. That seems insane for private party much less a wholesale auction even with 16k miles.

Here's another that is about to end at a very fine price (for the buyer).

2002 CS, $26,500, only 17,000 miles!
