I had the original until 101k miles on my 01. While doing the RMS I decided to do the upgrade since they were already in there and was only charged for the part not labor. I think the $550 for the upgraded bearing was worth it just for peace of mind and may help in resale.. kind of a cool paper weight as well.

125k, original single row, mobil1 used all it's life, original motor, flange and RMS only updated to the newer version with improved seals. I sleep just fine. 1k+ mile trips, no problemo.

'99 C2 w/ 76k miles - engine never dropped
'99 Boxster w/ 112k miles - original IMS bearing

I picked up the C2 three years ago with just over 30k miles on the clock and have had ZERO maintenance issues, so much for the garage queen theory! I personally would set these cars on fire before I would install any aftermarket monkey parts into them.

01 C4 at 70k with the original IMSB. RMS was replaced twice early in life but has been sound for the last 10 years. Clutch was also replaced at the same time the second RMS was done (had about 50% life in it, but I just had to pay for the parts and labor was covered).

I'm don't have sleepless nights over it, but I'll do the upgrade when I replace the clutch in the next 5-10k (which over course means it will let go on the way to the shop ).

98K 99 C2 with original IMS. The car was built 1/1998 so it is one of the very first 996's to make it stateside.

Mine had around 115k when I replaced the IMSB. Mechanic said it looked fine but I figured since I needed a new clutch I might as well.

An actual failed bearing is rare, especially on cars with over ~50k miles. If it was going to happen, it would have happened by now (of course, there are exceptions, but they are even more rare).

I replaced the bearing in my '02 at 101k miles because I was in there doing a new clutch anyway, but the original bearing was still good as new.
