Changed oil today. I finally left the 15w50 for 5w40. Using Castrol Edge, A40 certified. I cut open the filter and found it amazingly clean. No metal whatsoever. I did find a few dark fragments within the folds which you can see here. This is every piece of debris in the whole filter, which doesn't seem like much to me. The stuff is obviously very small and looks kinda like dirt, plant (leaf), or bug parts, but could be something else. Overall, I feel pretty good about my 15 year old motor's condition now.

That seems like a lot of guide/pad wear pieces for only 32,000 miles. Mines at 57K with no guide/pad pieces. Anyone else have an opinion? Maybe age of engine?
I think I would at least remove the sump cover and see if guide/pad material is significant. You can visially inspect some of the guides too while your changing the IMSB.
Really??? I am surprised that everyone so far feels this is a lot of material in the filter. So you guys cut open your filters, extend the pleats completely, and don't have anything in there? I mean, this is literally 8 or 9 VERY small pieces of what looked like plant material. Could've been a dirty funnel I used at some time although I don't remember using one. I would think guide pad wear would be hard plastic.
I wouldn't get worked up over that. Next oil change check the filter again, if there is a lot more then drop the sump and investigate further.
On my first oil change of my air-cooled 1980 911 you should have seen the crap I found on the sump plate, lots of miles on the engine at the time. I buttoned it up and drove it another 35,000 miles 'till I sold her. Ran like a champ.
Doesn't look like guides to me, maybe a little old sealant flash. Only 32k miles on a 99? Drive that car, man! I though I was shameful at only 16k miles in 5 years to get to 48k miles on my '02. How long have you had it?
