Default Pulled Trans this Afternoon, Bad IMS Leak?

Couldn't get motivated today so pulled trans this afternoon. I don't think this is all from the RMS. If anyone cares to render opinion about the source of leak heres a pic. Guess it was on its way out. I wont post anymore about it if no one finds this interesting. Im just curious about it.

To me, it looks like it is dribbling down from the RMS seal and coating the IMS cover.

Its hard to tell but that makes sense to. Wasn't expecting it to be this bad. No oil drips on shop floor. I had ordered a RMS seal and tool anyway so I was replacing regardless.

Look inside the trany, I bet you have a thick layer of oil sluge..at least mine did. Looks like a slow leak that allowed the oil to turn to a mixture of thick oil and clutch dust before it could leak out.

Doesn't look like it's coming from the IMS. It looks like the IMS is catching flying oil from the left.

Man, talk about a close call. Aren't you glad you decided to do this before your 300 mile trip?

FWIW, I'm willing to bet a good portion of 996's on the roads look like this.

Weeps seem to be commonly accepted amongst German cars in particular, leaks are another story..

My 996 is like a male dog. It leaves its mark wherever it parks.

For God's sake it's clearly an RMS leak!! How do you ever get out of bed in the morning!!

Worry about it when it stops leaking - then you're in trouble!!!

Fanny, LOL, it was a Sunday and I felt lazy. Thanks all for the opinions but I guess it doesnt matter since Im changing RMS anyway. My point is that if a amateur "fool" like me can do this job, anyone can.

On a side note, I will be conducting a test to see how far I can throw the "triple square" bellhousing bolt. Thats just stupid when they could have used an allen.

You might wanna pay close attention in reinstalling the RMS seal, even if it's the one with the updated seal. It seems like even the dealer techs can't do it right half the time.

According to my hero JR, it must be done with the Porsche tool, which I have. (and I ordered an extra seal just in case theres a learning curve). Thanks, Alp.

And, Porsche says install it "dry" which strikes me as odd. Seems like it would make it easier and shouldnt promote future leaks. Oh well. I will install EXACTLY as JR says to.

Why? Porsche has always bent us over with the dry method without any lube historically.
