Default Motor Mounts - Input Request

Hi all,
I have a noise when I shut the car off that can only be described as a motor knock. I have heard some others say that with worn mounts you can hear knocking sounds and given the position of the exhaust I am beginning to think this might be the cause. They sit pretty even, but do look low.

My only hesitation is that when I had the PPI done in March I specifically asked them about this and they said they were good.

I am beginning to second guess that opinion as I dont have any indication these were ever done.

Attached is a shot of how she currently sits. TIA

Left one looks lower, I say change 'em! I did mine, and it transformed the car's shifting performance and engine manners.

Is it like the engine over-runs a bit even after turned off and it made a clanking noise? If you hold down the clutch when turning off the engine, is the noise gone?

year and miles?
MM issues can more be felt while shifting. The will clunk on a shift and make the shift feel sloppy.
They are a cheap enough and easy enough DIY thing to do. The left side does appear to be hanging lower. I think you would have to pull one to tell for 100% if they were sagging. Did mone in about 45 min... So you could pull one easy enough to inspect

Not sure your year, but assuming it's the newest of 996's and it's an '04, still they are 9 years old (10 if you figure production). Replace them. It's an easy DIY and makes a world of difference (at least it did in mine!!!).

Motor Mount replacements are a pretty easy replacement and would at least take off the the list of issues of the "chase" if that does not eliminate the knocking you describe. Though note I have had 3 996's now and I do always hear what I will describe as a "shut-down" sort of knocking/pinging, but it is very short and to me is normal sounding...not alarming in any way.

There is a recent motor mount discussion https://rennlist.com/forums/996-forum/748157-need-motor-mounts.html a"]here,[/URL] amongst many others here too that may help decipher your sound.

Good luck.

Could be normal DMS noise. As Ahsai asked same clutch in or out?

Guys, first thanks for all the responses.

First the info I should have included:
2003
90,000 Miles

IMS/Clutch/RMS done at 87,000 miles.

I have not thought to try it with the clutch pressed in, only out so I will try that.

luvmy911 - I have seen that thread and have been tracking it.

Ahsai - its not a prolonged cycling, just that noise.

Noob question - whats a DMS?

TIA

All,
Thanks for the feedback. After speaking with the dealership the car was serviced at with the previous owner, they confirmed the engine mounts had not been done previously. For the price and ease of replacement, I figure it cant hurt.

So today I placed an order with Pelican for some new mounts. Should arrive by this Thursday and will post a picture after installation for comparison.

Quick question about supporting the engine. In this pic it shows the jack on the sump plate. Is this correct? I only place my jack on the metal piece aft of the pan. Just want to make sure all is well during the procedure.

I have raised my engine and my car with a jack under the oil pan, but I put a piece of 2x12 under the pan to distribute the weight.

Just wanted to follow up. Did the mounts over the weekend, super easy job..didnt even need to jack the car up.

Nice difference in idle smoothness and overall tightness while driving. Old ones were not leaking but definitely sagged over time.

Question to all, should this have been something the shop picked up on, given that I asked them specifically to check them out ? To me it was obvious visually from the exhaust but I didnt want to second guess the "experts". Thoughts?

After pic:
