Thread is so long that my comment is almost unrelated, but here it goes:

I have 150k on car. Engine blew at 108. Where? Going to change tires half a mile from my house. Figure. Other than that, I have driven it around 100k miles in 5 years. Make the math. I use for 200 mile trips almost weekly. Nothing happens. Unlike my ml55 that has a dashboard that lights more than a Christmas tree.

Have done so many 500 milers, 800 milers, I dont care. I just drive it. And is a 99, one of the "bad ones"

Was it IMS or D-chunking or some other thing that will affect this type of engine sometime in its life?

Good that you persisted with the car and not sell it for scrap.

It was meant to help, KK, think positively! This 300-mile trip is a perfect opportunity for you to get out of your 'short trip' shell.
Enjoy!

U can choose to have a car and look at it, or drive it. I was not too happy when it happened. Now I have a new engine. Financial sense? No.

My '03 Targa has 85,000 miles, and I plan on driving it 2,000 miles, from Los Angeles to Indianapolis, when we move next year.

Yeah of course, it was good you didn't decide to throw the towel and buy a 'reliable' sports car.

I think for peace of mind, when the mileage ticks over to 100,000 (miles or kms) all Porsche engines would benefit from thorough parts updates/upgrades.

Well, at that point, I could sell an old car with no engine, and spend more money on a car that is not reliable anyway. A 997? IMS. give it 100k miles. A mercedes? That works but is not a sports car in my book, even if they try. And, my rebuild cost me only 8.5k out of the doorl.
