From all that I have gleaned from everything I have read including the proposed class settlement, I think 10% is much too high as well, but I don't think anyone argues that some proportion of cars experience IMS failue.

Could it happen on a 300 mile trip? Sure. It could also happen pulling out of your driveway.

What I don't understand is how posing this question on a forum can help get you any closer to what YOU personally feel comfortable with. Driving ANY car ANY amount of miles has risk. Trying to assess the relative risk for any particular car from what you read in forums is time wasted IMO.

You obviously have researched these cars well. Given that, and your the tone of all your posts, I'm surprised you actually bought one. However, that said, if you are uncomfortable with the risk of driving 300 miles, than don't. It is entirely a decision only you can make.

It sounds like you are doing the IMS replacement, which I personally think is a good thing to do. Sounds like you will be happy putting off any more driving until that is done.

That poll is BS the last 5 failures have no substantiation whatsoever not even a post!! You're telling me that what 40'000 M96 engines have failed absolute rubbish I'd be surprised if the actual IMSB failure rate is much higher than .5%!!

You may have a high post count but you're still a fool!!

There were <200 participants in that poll. Please do not ever base the 6.6% statistic on such a small sample space! 6.6% from that poll covers only the cars in this forum and also only the ones that bothered to vote. There are thousands of happily running cars out there that weren't part of the poll at all.

As 500_19B said, its your personal level of comfort. But seriously, do you ever drive the car the way its meant to be driven?

If you plugged a Durametric in his car, you might see Type 1 and Type 2 "underRevs".

I kid.

Not to put words into Marc's mouth, but I think that's the reason he had misgivings about starting that poll in the first place. No reasonable person can conclude that 1 out of every 15 cars sold has failed based on anything besides that poll with an insufficient and biased sample size. It figures that KK takes that number as gospel and will probably now repeat it ad nauseum. Y'all haven't seen anything yet until he scrapes together the cash for a TT or GT3 and sells his C4, the anti-996 posts will then probably become completely out of control, all based on "fact"...

Flat 6 Innovations has posted a video on their Facebook page showing the IMS Solution install. Very well done.

No, no , no..... not my poll. I posted that at the request of the forum, I think the data is as worthless as can be.

KK, half your posts are about being terrified to drive your 996, and the other half are posts about how worthless the 996 is anyway. Seems like you spend a lot of time agonizing about whether your worthless car is going to break. Polish it up, take a picture, get it printed poster-size, and sell it. I'm really not even being facetious - to me it seems like this car causes you a staggering amount of anxiety. I can't imagine the fun you can glean from your 15-minute trips can possibly outweigh the worry - so why don't you just get rid of it - or sell the M96 and move the roller into your living room where you can enjoy it without the worry of it getting wet or the engine failing?

Serious question: How long after replacing the IMSB with the LN IMSB will it be before you start worrying about replacing it? Raby and others suggest that the bearing is a wear item. How often will you plan to replace it?
