We have a trip to San Antonio planned late this month. I would like to take the 996 but I must admit Im a little concerned. That's 300 miles!

Mine has 57K miles on it with many PM items changed. I have a new IMSB and clutch kit ordered and on the way. I should be able to change before our trip if I take some time off work.

Would I be nuts to take this trip without doing the IMSB first? 300 miles may not seem like much to some of you but I rarely drive it more than a few miles from home. I do sometimes take a 15 mile trip to Beaumont for fun.

Should I just get it over with and do the IMSB and clutch for peace of mind or just take the trip? I mean really, how many of you guys are actually still left out there with the original single row bearing?

You should also be concerned around cylinder scoring which the chance would be reduced if you install low temp thermostat :-)

Wondering whether to post on this or not...hmmm...KrazyK, from your other posts clearly you have invested a lot of time, money, hard work and effort in your car, but in the end it is just a car! A fabulous and wonderful marvel of automotive engineering, performance and driving pleasure. Get in that car and take the 300 mile drive...your Porsche will love you for it! I do a trip down to Miami, about the same distance, and every time I do the car just seems to run better for it. Blow out the carbon, get it going, I've never heard that engine sing like it does after a super run of 300 miles at highway speed. What's the point of having a Porsche if you don't drive it and use it for everything it is? I actually use mine as a daily driver and really hate the puttering 7-10 mile trips everyday. The car never seems to get the true exercise it needs. Wear the bug splatters and stone chips from a road trip like a badge of honor. It means you love your car for what it is, and not as some garage queen that you just sit and look at. Your Porsche is a perfect choice for a road trip. Just so you know...99 C2 with 124,000 miles, do all my own repairs/maintenance, car is strong and amazing with no problems. You live once and have many regrets for things you should have done but didn't. In the end, do you want to say "well I kept that car really perfect for the next guy?" or do you want to say "I did it, enjoyed every minute and had a blast in my wonderful car?" Love it, drive it and quit stressing over it. You won't regret it.

Go ahead and drive the 300 miles. When you're done, drive to the east coast and then back again - your car needs to be driven more like 3,000 miles to be appreciated.
