Should I Take the 996 on Upcoming Road Trip?
#17
Actually, you realize that driving it for short distance is not recommended?! The car never gets up to operating temperature. And most importantly neither does the oil!
I feel bad for anyone that joins the forum and sees all the post by KK and then thinks the car is a dud!
KK is secretly shorting the 996 market!
The real answer is to sell your car, and get a turbo or a gt3!

We have a trip to San Antonio planned late this month. I would like to take the 996 but I must admit Im a little concerned. That's 300 miles!
Mine has 57K miles on it with many PM items changed. I have a new IMSB and clutch kit ordered and on the way. I should be able to change before our trip if I take some time off work.
Would I be nuts to take this trip without doing the IMSB first? 300 miles may not seem like much to some of you but I rarely drive it more than a few miles from home. I do sometimes take a 15 mile trip to Beaumont for fun.
Should I just get it over with and do the IMSB and clutch for peace of mind or just take the trip? I mean really, how many of you guys are actually still left out there with the original single row bearing?

For you and your car id say why risk it?
This is a huge step beyond driving the car around the block then doing an oil change. How many times would you have to stop to change all the fluids in 300 miles? Oh but thats one way...so 600 miles has gotta add up to about 10 changes minimum.
So ya id say save the expense and dont risk it...leave er in the garage.

Gelefsky's right. Sell it. Sell it now. Rent a Camry for your outing. I don't think I'd even check the oil for a 300 mile trip. I'm planning to go an a trip with my daughter to California this summer. 1250 miles each way. I'll change the oil before I go but only because it's due then. Other than that I have no concerns. Frankly, I'm more worried about it getting hit in a parking lot. This car is significantly more reliable than many I have owned. You've researched yourself into a frenzy, get over it. I'm surprised you even bought the car with the research you say you did before purchase...

Just bring materials and tools in your frunk to do an oil change when you get there for the trip back and you should be all good. Make sure to cut open your filter and inspect it BEFORE heading back.
FWIW, I'm pretty sure I'm on single row bearing and have traveled 800 miles revving the **** out of the car and often downshifting to 3rd and 4th to pass people without any hiccups. I made the mistake though of topping the oil at the end of the trip based on my electronic gauge and not checking the dipstick physically.
Get out from under that shell. Do you not go out on Saturday night fearing some drunk driver will hit you too?

The top ten things to do with a car you are afraid to drive:
10: Cut the roof off and plant flowers
9: Store your old magazine collection in it
8: Become a reviewer for battery maintainers
7: Chart the changes in oil composition in a car that is never started.
6: Check measurements of tire flat spots every week.
5: Make the frunk a wet bar
4: Sit in the drivers seat grip the wheel and make vroom vroom noises.
3: Enjoy telling your plight to web forums.
2: Never have to clean brake dust off the wheels.
and the number one???

KK-
I completely understand where you're coming from. These cars are meant to be pampered and really aren't built for long travels like this. Shine her up, put her in the garage and take the DD. Save the Porsche for sunny day 5 mile jaunts.
Sincerely,
Ferrari Guy

KK, you are on the extreme opposite end of the spectrum to Rowan Atkinson, you know the guy that daily drives his McLaren F1 and the one that had totaled his car recently and repaired it(1+ million dollar repair bill) but yet continues to drive it like it was a Camry?
Seriously, I think you need to see a shrink for your condition.

Three Wheelin'
I bought my 996 in Dallas a couple of years ago. I flew out and drove it home to Florida. The RMS was weeping, tires were crap, regeneration valve was **** yet I still drove it home with a smile on my face. I loaded up a few bottles of oil, candy bars and diet coke and didn't look back.
If your IMS isn't leaking, what's the problem? If my car had a single row, non leaking bearing I would still track the **** out of it, much less worry about a 300 mile trip. Drive the car!
