My "Stealth" Aftermarket Double Din Stereo Install
Just completed my stereo install on my 996 C4S. I changed out my PCM2 unit to a Kenwood DNX9990HD. I also used an old Phoenix Gold amp that I had from a previous car. I wanted to keep the car as stock looking as possible in order to avoid attracting attention from potential stereo thieves. I decided to make a "faux" OEM stereo faceplate cover to hide the Kenwood unit.
The best way would certainly to cut up an OEM unit and make a faceplate out of it, but I couldn't find a cheap donor unit after a few month of searching. I used a bracket supplied with one of my old double din units and glued a printed photo of my PCM unit. This faceplate attaches to the Eurospeed kit via strong neodymium magnets glued at each corner. The cover attaches and detaches easily. I think the cover should pass in poor lighting conditions (e.g. dark parking garages) but I probably have to play around with the photo printing to achieve a more realistic look.

I'd love a copy of the Carrera 4S start up screen if you don't mind sharing!

I have some questions about your install. In my 99 the HVAC controls are where your radio is. Is your setup something that I can do to my car or did yours come that way from the factory. I want to install a double DIN but of course the controls are in the way.
Please advise. Thanks mike

Neat job. It looks awesome! You're now tempting me to jump in and do this for my car
Curious question though - Do you really need to have a fake faceplate? Is stereo-theft that prevalent there? Its a nice mod to flaunt :P

I work at a university where there is still a lot of car theft where stuff gets stolen from the car. I dont mind the stereo being stolen but that usually comes with other collateral damage to the car. Plus like you said...Its a nice mod to flaunt :P

Thanks! Speed of the unit is pretty good with the latest firmware. The BT works fairly well and consistently. The Nav is good and picks up the sat signal much faster than my previous Kenwood Garmin units. The interface is not the most intuitively laid out but I like the ability to tweak the unit in many ways. The touch control are good but I hate sometimes how I have to scroll through a list by using a thin scroll bar on the side.
