I assume that nice bearing is full of engine oil. Hard to believe the original grease could survive 99k miles with hot oil always trying to sneak by the seals.
'03 C4S w/ 39,850 miles ... I'm the new owner (#4) ... car came with little service/maintenance history. Original IMS bearing replaced by an FSI approved disciple in my area after borescope qualification. No damage or issue with the OEM IMS bearing I decided to install 'the solution"
I wish I had known this car had a dual IMS, as I would not have replaced it. Oh well now I have a new clutch assembly etc. so I'm good to go for many years.

New IMSB will help with resale if you choose to sell in the next 5yrs. New, informed, 996 buyers will always ask if the IMSB has been replaced regardless of dual or single. It was a good while you’re in there investment.

Not really as it's going to be due for another replacement in 5 years, unless it was the IMS Solution from LN.

That 5-year guarantee confuses me. Is it just marketing, or did the shop install something just as fragile as the OEM part? Why a limit on life for the new bearing, regardless of miles?

The bearing design is a serviceable/wearable component, which is nice they even put a guarantee on it. If you don't feel comfortable exceeding that warranty period, then have the Solution installed. I had a dual row LN bearing installed, will probably extend past the "warranty" period because I'm not worried about it. I trust the design and will replace the next time the trans needs to be dropped.
I think of it no different than a belt changes on a Ferrari. Can a 10 year old belt with only 5,000 miles on it be fine, sure, but it can also still fail. It's up to you as the owner to decide how to address these nuances. It is a sports car after all.
1999 C2, early build. No issue w/IMS bearing. At 98,000 miles the bearing was replaced as part of a 100,000 mile service; replaced w/an auto-oiler. Currently at 110,000 miles.
New to me 2001 C4 Cab with 56,199 miles. Bearing seals were not in place, zero grease and race cap had come loose. Inside one end you could see the spalling on the bearing raceway. Like I said, got it just in time.

Awesome! Success story! Mine was very similar, dual-row 99 and one row had even already fallen apart (broken ball cage).
