People equate polished, anodized, shiny parts to high quality when in fact, none of these have anything to do with it. But it sells the parts and all that matters.

I agree 100%

Also getting tired of seeing over abundance and misuse of carbon fiber on road cars(even tackier when they are overlays or fake cf).

I cross referenced the P/N for both 996 and 997 air filters and they appear to be exactly the same. Even the pictures look identical. So if the cross section of the filter is the same then no matter how pretty the box you aren't going to get any improvement. Perhaps the sound may be different due to the box characteristics but seems like a lot of money spent for nothing.

Exactly. I elected to get the silicone hose instead and remove the resonator chamber to gain internal chamber volume and cap off the hole. Working on making CNC Aluminum cap off plates shortly. Over half the cost of 997 box and makes it sound better.

OK I read this entire thread because the OP asked about changing the intake housing. Silly me, I thought he was asking about the intake manifold not the stupid air box. I was all excited for naught....

Sorry to confuse everyone.
I just have a part on the car that is not in great shape and some one I know offered me a used part from a later model car at a good price that I thought was form fit replacement (because it was from a turbo it wasn't).

Ok but this part is called the air filter housing and not an intake.
I was also hoping to see a manifd discussion, not a filter housing thread. Visually the newer hpusing looks better.
