*sigh* I'm assuming this seemed funnier before you wrote it out.

The $1400 is for parts and installation. And it is $1400+
The car is there and diagnosis is free. It is mine again tomorrow afternoon.
I can get rid of this Chevy Impalla 4 door POS and drive a real car
again! I am feeling much better already, just thinking this...........................

Thanks for standing by me SD! This is a tough bunch around here. I thought maybe some of the more mature members might have some wisdom to share but I see that is not the case. Got to know where you are posting. Any way, I think I have contributed to the knowledge base here. When the water pump goes south, expect a knocking that gets your attention. When someone says , my beautiful 996 just started making this horrible knocking sound, now you can ask, is it your water pump.

Just curious, how many hours did they quote for labor?

Please dont get upset with the members here when they cant help you because you dont even describe the problem correctly. I would imagine if it really is the water pump there is a fluid leak as well.

Try to be more accurate next time and maybe others could help yoou more. Also the water pump is an easy DIY you can do and save about $1200. That was my other point about buying a 12 year old car with no mechanical ability.

If your serious about working on your car, that money would go a long way towards tools, service manual, etc.

Water pump @ $200
Bentley SM @ $100 (keep for future projects)
Air Lift fluid service kit @ $100 (keep for future fluid flush or help a friend)
Basic hand tools ????
Krazy...not everyone has the time, space, knowledge or inclination to work on their cars. Enough. We get the point. You are clearly Rembrandt with a wrench. We can't all be that freakin smart. Relax dude. In a very short time you have managed to **** off members in 2 forums. Of course, that is your plan, but I am tired of my email notifications blowing up because you like to stir the pot. I suggest you chill...or move on.

And, you said the engine started running bad. Water pump would not cause engine to run bad. Maybe eventually overheat and burn up but not what you described about running bad. Hard to help without seeing in person.

silent majority here:
then why bother continuing to comment on posts when you have no clue? and reread his original post...he wasnt looking for a diagnosis just lamenting the fact that his car is broken and needs to be checked out.
you have consistently diagnosed problems incorrectly on here and have offered bad product referrals more than once (the last being engine mounts made in china) and have successfully and continuously rubbed people the wrong way on multiple forums. all the while blasting people for not doing all the work themselves and further rubbing in 200 v 1400.
take a step back from the forums for a bit and just stop posting.

I'm glad it was just a water pump. I agree that some major failure was unlikely. But it really can be hard to give thoughtful feedback with some kinds of symptoms.

I wouldn't worry about the $1400. When your car gets towed in, you usually pay full price for parts and labor. Often not a lot of negotiation possible....you're just happy they figured it out and hope they do a good job.

However, given that it's the water pump, ask to see the pump and visually inspect the impellor to see if pieces are missing from the plastic vanes. If so, I'd want to know what they did to back flush the cooling system to try to get any fragments out of the heads which can cause them to overheat and warp.

Glad it wasn't more serious.
