great news - easy fix - very happy to hear this

and the mechanic was good to you - the car runs great (or will) so it's totally worth the money to get it back without having to deal with very clod - dirty hands and being really stuck in the dark out in your driveway while the snow begins to fall and you discovered you need a hose clamp, and the parts store is closed

right

not everyone like DIY projects and even those that do, dont often do anything more the oil changes and basic things - dont worry about it - how come you think your mechanic has a shop - he likes it, let him do it....grab a brew and watch some Monday night football (if you like that) - I'm hangin with my dog....might crack open a brew myself

Glad you are on the road to recovery!
(and now have a good mechanic you can go to when needed)

DB, water pump labor should be about 3 hours. Really great to hear you got it figured out and will be back on the road soon. Good looking 996 by the way.

+996.

I fully expect DIY from Honda forums where most owners are teens with more time than money. Also the younger guys generally don't mind getting dirty and bruising a few knuckles. Although I've been working on cars for over 20 years, I'm really losing my drive and inclination to work on these things sometimes.

Had I not known how to work on cars, I'd probably be right there with the op, especially since I have more money(not really) than time now and you'll know it's done right and not second guessing your FIRST attempt at doing something. Some are willing to take the risk and some are not. I can certainly appreciate DIY but also know its not everyone's cup of tea and can also respect the other side of it.

This isn't Renntech so DIY shouldn't be pushed onto others IMHO.

+1 on what was said about it could easily have happened when you were in a bad location, weather, timing wise, etc, and failure could have been catastrophic. $1400 is nothing compared to "what might have been", which is why I find it curious when people make fun of me for doing preemptive maintenance when there is plenty of evidence to suggest avoidance is far preferred being cheaper and less destructive in the long run.

People have questioned "WHY?" when I (and others) have replaced apparently perfectly working 11 year old AOS, WP, T-stat, oil filler neck, etc. It's 11+ years old, that's why. I'd rather do it under my own terms, than on the cars terms.

While I agree some of KKs posts in this thread were unnecessarily abrasive, they were not any more than Hurdis or some others, on many more threads, for instance, & many of KKs threads HAVE been very useful, DIY wise, for a relatively new member. It's hard for a younger DIY to not realize that not everyone else can't or is not interested in a DIY when it's your DD, for instance. Also, I never saw him recommend chinese knock off motor mounts, but others have. He clearly showed he installed European made Reins which are an OE manufacturer for Porsche, and sold by Pelican.

Even doing my own work, and buying parts from Pelican, Sunset & Suncoast, I have spent $1000s DIYing over the last 5 years and the car has always run "well". It runs, looks and handles much better than "well" now, & I intend to keep it that way and better, both mechanically and cosmetically, for a long time.

Out of curiosity, I checked the price of a new Chevy Impala. Holy Crap!
12 year old Porsch or new Impala? I take 12 year old 911 any day.
Are people in this country crazy? Who would spend such money on a POS like that?

My company car is an Impala. The only redeeming quality is the cupholder. It works really well. The rest of the car is plastic junk. Even basic Hyundai's laugh at the Impala.

Yeah, the cup holders are pretty good on my rental Impala! But it drives like a ship. I can't wait to get my 996 back... Been drivin' this Impala POS since last Saturday. I almost forgot how boring an American Detroit car was. When I was getting the rental, I was talking to this pretty young thing named Chantall. She asked me, "What do you currently drive?" Man, I never felt so embarrased to say "A Porsche 911". That sounds like something a real jerk would say. Come on, who drives a "Porsche 911"? ...................................... I do this afternoon

my last rental was a chrysler 300

WOW talk about crap!
and handling - the car came loose at 30 mph on a cloverleaf freeway entrance? WTF? my suburban can take that ramp at 50! (surely the tires were mostly to blame - but hole crap, no wonder so many people just crash randomly - they need better cars)

should be a law, they have to drive a Porsche on a car control clinic style course and THEN drive the POS they are considering buying on the same course - they would "get it" - the POS is horrid in the event you actually need the car to perform in something like an emergency evasive maneuver - or changing lanes, stopping, turning, going - OH WAIT - it has a built in MP3 player, bluetooth and a navagator - oh crap, sign me up !

RE: cup holders

true story.
first time I was taking the kids out in the "new" Porsche (996) - my son runs up all excited, some sort of drink in hand, opens the door an prepares to get in... I shout "HEY!!"

he stops and looks at me

I say, put that drink in the cup holder

he looks....and looks.....and looks.... and says "there is no cup holder"

I reply, "That's right, because there are NO drinks coming with"

I wish my wife would get it. Everytime she gets in my car, she has a bucket of iced tea. Then complains about the way I drive my super car. She wants a limo type of ride. With cup holders and everything. She is quite happy with her Honda Accord. I am quite happy with my Porsche 996
