Default First impressions

I recently purchased a 2000 996 cab manual from out of state. While waiting for delivery, I bought locally an 05 Cayenne Turbo for the wife. The last Porsche I even sat it was my fathers 930 back in the day.

As far as background, I live in the Midwest, route 66. People still meet at the same Steak and Shake that my dad did 45 years ago to BS and go drag race. I have had some cool stuff over the past several years including several classic muscle cars. Most recently was: 50th Z06, a few blown C6 vettes, and a 1000 hp 2011 Twin turbo Camaro.

The 996:
The car looks and is really small. It feels even smaller when you sit in it. This is not a bad thing. I get this go cart feeling when I get in it. I don't understand people having issues with driving it smooth when they first get one. Everything was like clockwork for me. I like the fact that the 6th gear is actually a 6th gear and not a highway gear. I have been removing plastic **** from the interior and applying silicone and reinstalling. The rattles are disappointing. My wifes car pulls away from me in a straight line slightly. That sucks. I see a modded turbo in my future. The sound of these things is cool, although they sound like they are in pain when you first start them up in the morning. I don't understand complaints about the sport seats. Best seats of any of my cars. Hugs you just right. There is no stupid bells, whistles, lights, beeps.....nothing. Love it. Understeer........ugggg. I like going around corners. Did I mention that corners are cool? The 1500 watt stereo that the previous owner put in kicks butt. I can clearly feel the thump of old school Chili Peppers in the back of my seat at over 100 with the top down. Oh yeah, understeer. Need floor mats. On my list for next week. Wheel doctor guy is coming Monday to fix the minor rash on the back two wheels obviously caused by some woman that happened to drive this car one day. Dr. Vinyl is fixing the few minor scuffs I found inside Tuesday. Window tint Monday. The last guy must have been old. How can you drive without tint? Geez
Cool car. Much fun!

Oh, the leather is pretty good. The car is 13 years old and looks better than the crappy Vette seats in six months. I'm not sure how Dr. Vinyl does it, but they make all those cracks go away in less than an hour for $75.

I'm old, so no tint.

Welcome, BTW.

Yea, Cabs rattle a bit, with lots and lots of miles, quite a bit. If you're **** you can address them. It's a price you pay for going topless and having a suspension that works quite well. They're quieter with the top down.

Fit a stiffer rear sway bar. I like the GT3 type with 4 adjustment holes. Try 2nd or 3rd from the end. It will eliminate a lot of the push and make the corners fun. You can really get to the point of being able to push a Cab really hard into the twisties by learning the car and being smooth.

Get a PSE, it'l make better music than your 1500 watt stereo. And yea the Sport Seats, I miss 'um.

Congrats, and welcome!

As far as the rattles, I had more than my fair share when I got my '99 C2. This TSB helped quite a lot...didn't get rid of all of them, but got rid of about 80% of them.

Part # 996 541 903 00

Doesn't cost much, get a spatula and start cramming it in there.

IIRC from one of your earlier posts, wifey's is a Turbo Cayenne right? Those things have lots of pull!

Take care, and post some pics when you get a minute.

Thanks for the tips. It only has 50,000 miles on it. Too soon for rattles I think, but I will try the sway bar. Planning on leaving it alone after that. I'm buying a turbo next year.

Much better, and far more attractive, than factory.

If you're buying a turbo next year, your wife's Cayenne will never pull on you again Ever.

I hate window tint on cars now. I guess I'm old too. I liked it back in the 1980s on my Pontiac Firebird...

Ive burnt my eyes a few times over the years. I wear sun glasses on a cloudy day. The sun bothers me. It is part medical and part that I think sports cars look better with reasonable, legal tint.

I'm older as well but do have tint. Apart from the look it does keep the car cooler in the summer. I'm in Atlanta with a black interior.

Had to take the passenger seat out to figure out why it wasn't getting power. Fixed it. Cheerios all over the place under it. Geez. Dr. Vinyl made the drivers seat look brand new for $83. The wheel guy completely made the rear wheels brand new for $185. Ordered hood shocks for $14 each. Will be here Friday. Ordered Loyds mats for too much money. Be here in two weeks. Tint is done. Got Dr Colorchip to fix the very few minor rock chips. Will do it next week. I'm going to have the carbon fiber steering wheel done in leather next week. I'm about done. I can't find a single flaw in the entire car. Someone will get a really nice car when I get rid of it next year.

Oh yeah, Porsche dealers are a joke. They wanted five hours at $125 an hour to fix something on my wife's car I fixed in an hour and a half over two beers. They will never get my money for any kind of service. Occasionally I will be forced to buy parts from them. Even then, I will order online so I do not have to look the guy in the eye while I am being raped.
