Default Busted my wheel lock key...Do it myself or have dealer fix it?

Was trying to take my wheels off yesterday and my wheel lock key developed a crack in it.

I have to take my car to the dealer tomorrow for a DE inspection. Should I just have them fix it or should I try to remove it myself with the removal tools Sears sells? Can I purchase lug nuts for this car at any auto shop? (I don't need or want the locks anymore).

If the locks are OEM, most dealerships have a complete set of keys on hand, and should be able to easily remove your lock. If not OEM, then will probably need to pursue the tool method, although likely the dealership can do that too, though at probably some time/cost.

I would got the dealer route. That sears tool will end badly with some big scratches in your wheel.

I broke my wheel lock as well. Went to the dealer and they had a set of 30 Porsche wheel locks. Of course we had to try most of them before we found the right one as the number on the wheel lock did not show in the system.

You can definately purchase a new wheel lock kit or just purchase 4 new lugs.

I would get them from Porsche rather than pepboys....

You can also get a 23 or 24mm (forgot which one) 12pt socket and hammer it on
and remove them that way.

Then you can just replace the 4 locking lugs with regular ones.

I called the dealer and spoke with my service advisor. He told me that have the master keys at the shop and can use them to remove these locks. From there I'll just opt for the "plain" lug bolt.

Thankfully this should be the easiest way to do this instead of trying to pry it off myself.

Appreciate the input everyone!

I've broken 2 of them @ $35 a piece. Here's what I learned, get a new one and put into a 19mm socket, put it in place without the ratchet and hit it hard with a hammer a couple of times. Now try and remove it with a ratchet and it should turn no problem.
That's how the dealer did it both times I destroyed the key. The tech bashed it really hard with a ball peen hammer.

Default pay the price

+1 on replacing the lock-lug nuts with regular OEM lug nuts. New OEM ones are about $9 a piece I think, but they are definitely an engineered part and worthy of the price.

Just came back from the dealer. It took them a while to find the right key as mine didn't have an identifier but they were able to locate it, remove the bolts and replace them with "regular" pieces.

Now if I find my car on bricks one day I have only myself to blame.

Don't worry...no one steals wheels anymore. It's easier to just tow the whole car.

But at least you save those guys the trip to the dealership to get your wheels off

Do the dealers charge for taking off the locks? Or do they do it for free?

Easy to remove "locking" lug nuts with the reverse threaded lug socket. Rips them right off, makes me wonder why people even install theft prevention lug nuts.

I have a set of keys at the shop but unfortunately you're in Charlotte. They're not TOO hard to take off w/out the key, but a key from the dealer would certainly be the best way to get them off. Good luck.

No but I also had some other repairs being done at the same time so it's hard to tell if you would get charged or not.

This thread was bumped from a while ago so I'm good but thanks for the offer!
