Steering Wheel Dye/Refurbishment
Hello all, my steering wheel on my 99 C2 tip Cab is starting to show serious signs of wear. Anyone have any ideas? The previous owner redyed it at some point, but I am not sure how long ago it was done. Decent job, but under sweaty hands (or dirty parking/valet folks) it has really worn through. I will repost with a pic tonight. I am on Long Island, NY for any shop recommendations. Dealer (stealer) wants to replace the steering wheel in its entirety, it is a four spoke tiptronic button wheel.

I have the same problem with my savannah four spoke steering wheel. The steering wheel is in good condition, but the color is fading. Took it to a local shoe repair guy, and he offered to dye it for $30. Guess I'll give it a try

Try this, www.colorplus.com and look at the Surflex product. They have standard Porsche colors but I don't think Savannah Beige is one they offer.

I had a similar problem with my Graphite Gray steering wheel. The gray leather had turned blue. I ordered leather dye from dynamixdyes.com and it turned out great. I did it about 4-5 years ago and it's holding up well.
I think the bottle was about $40-50. If your shoe guy can do it for $30, that's a pretty good deal.

It's a little bit more expensive than dye, but I know many people who have used Dallas Steering Wheel and been pleased with the results. Take a look at www.dallassteeringwheel.com. This also gives you options like deviated stitching, alcantara inserts, etc.

I had a Momo suede wheel on my SC that got sun faded so I used a suede dye on it (got it at a shoe repair shop) and it came out great. Can't say whether it would work the same for cracked faded leather but it's worth a shot, I mean afterall, it already looks crappy, what are ya gonna do that'll make it worse?

As mentioned in post #5 dallas custom. You can customize with any material, any pattern. I did the airbag cover along with silver emblem(it looks gold with the flash in the pic I posted though) while I was at it.

Dye is at best a temporary solution and I'm not sure I would want to try a do-it-yourself job on the place I touch the most in the car. Any good interior shop can easily recover the wheel at a reasonable cost with matching leather.

Cover the crap up temporarily with a $10 leather steering wheel cover from Auto Zone or Pep Boys. Then you have lots of time to consider where to get the job done properly at a later date. The cabs tend to get more sun than the coupes which can fade the leather. I have one on mine which I intend to remove if I sell the car. There is no fading on the original leather steering wheel but I have mine covered anyways so it doesn't fade in the future. I would seriously consider doing what Geegee did. I think it looks really sharp.
