Dye is at best a temporary solution and I'm not sure I would want to try a do-it-yourself job on the place I touch the most in the car. Any good interior shop can easily recover the wheel at a reasonable cost with matching leather.
As I mentioned above, I redyed my steering wheel about four years ago and it's holding up fine. Definitely not just a temporary solution.
