Default I need your advice

I have been looking at a very clean 2000 Carerra 2 M/T 6 with 50K miles to replace my wife's 928 S4 daily driver. I went to a local dealership to educate my self on 996's and the sales person told me I should not consider anything older than mid 2002 models because there were lots of problems with the earlier modelsf. I would love to have your feedback on this.

If the consensus is that you agree with that salesperson, I was thinking perhaps an '06 cayman or Boxster S, just to be able to take advantage of the newer technology.

What say you"?

Thank you in advance!

Lots to learn about this issue by searching for "IMS" and the like. Don't be scared by some of the paranoia, but know that it is an issue to understand.

All Porsches have some issue or another...

The best advice is to always buy the newest Porsche you can afford. If you can swing a Cayman in great condition, that very well may be a better choice than a 2000 996... though that same money will buy a lot of 996! It is hard to compare cars separated by six years.

Default Dealer bias? Well, yes.

My two local p-car dealers almost never keep pre-2004 911s in their inventory (excepting garage queen GT3s and Turbos). They don't even try to make a market with such older cars because (a) there's too little margin, and (b) there's an active FSBO market for such models, especially within PCA circles.

So asking a dealer what he thinks about such models is a bit like asking your barber if you need a haircut. The response will be based on their self interests.

The one issue the 3.4L flat six that cant be corrected in advance is cracked heads. That is the only problem I worry about with my 99 996. I recommemd if you purchase any 996 to to the IMS upgrade.

Read the posts about IMS, RMS and make a decision.

That being said I love my 99 996! I was told to expect $5,000 a year in R&M costs from an Indy. I have never reached that level in a year but it could happen. Just remember these cars are not like taking a ford to the dealer for repair. You must get a PPI before purchase. And yes i agree get the best and newest car you can aford.

I've owned my 2000 C2 for almost nine years and have had very good luck. I agree with other posters. though, that you have to understand you are buying a high performance sports car and budget for repairs/upgrades accordingly. If you are careful about selecting a well kept used model, any 996 can be a good choice. Just know that you are jumping in the deep end of streetable racer pool and prepare for some pit stops.
