Short shifter question

Short shifter question
Well, the OEM SSK that I had installed 5 years and 50k miles ago is worn out, dealer says the bushings are shot. I believe that I heard we can use the 997 SSK in the 996 and am wondering if anyone has any experience with this.
Would appreciate some guidance, I will most likely purchase from Sunset but am unsure of what I am specifically asking for.
I am somewhat surprised that worn bushings can't be replaced instead of replacing the entire SSK.

Bushings are plastic in the Porsche SSK even the 997 SSK, Porsche does not provide replacement bushings that I know of, however the plastic bushings can be replaced with aftermarket aluminum bushings. They come with the short shifter kits available from aftermarket vendors such as Schnell and B & M. Haven't seen where you can by the bushings alone. It is not difficult for a DIY'er to replace the bushings.
Sunset sells the 997 SSK and comes as a complete shifter assembly. They will know what your asking for they sell a bunch.

Check out the 997 GT3 shifter. Suncoast has it for $385 with billet aluminum bushings.

I have the standard 997 shifter in my car and while I like it better than the 996, if I had it to do over I would have done the 997 GT3.

How does throw of the 997 GT3 shifter compare to the 996 OEM SSK? I have been happy with the 996 SSK, couldn't tolerate the standard shifter though. The one is the C4S is from the factory build and not only is the throw precise, it's actually smoother than the one in the C2 ever was.
Thanks - replacing mine isn't urgent, still shifts okay, so I have some time to decide.

I have the 2010 997 GT3 shifter and I think it is the best of both worlds.
Shorter than stock but not as short and the SSK but has metal bearing surfaces and the "feel" is very bolt action rifle like. Worth doing and I do not miss stock one one bit.

I have a 996 with a standard shifter and a 997 with a factory installed short throw... I don't notice much difference between the two. I'd be curious to hear about a comparison with the GT3 shifter.

C4s and C2 are same shifter unless the C4s had replaced with a SSK.
That said see this thread for more info on the 3 types of OEM shifters:

Thanks for all of the info - stopped at the dealer to pick up the C4S from service, talked to the mechanic about the shifter, although familiar with the plastic bushings wearing and how the shifter works, the guy was absolutely uniformed about installing a 997 shifter. All the folks at the dealer are really good to work with, but at times I wish they were themselves Porsche enthusiasts.

when the bushings in your shifter wear out you can replace them with these from the 996 cup car shift box
please excuse the HUGE blurry pic
the bigger part is the bushing, the smaller the retainer.you need two of each. Or you could go with the entire 996 cup shift box, add the 996 shift cables as well for an even more direct "bolt action" feel. With the cup shift box you will get a shorter throw and serviceable parts. The cables eliminate the rubber bushings with metal ball cups which really tightens up the feel, extremely popular with the 996/997 GT3 crowd, will work on your cars as well!!
