Default Dang 2nd gear pop out....grrrrr

Just started showing up in warm weather. Going to try the GBOX detent fix. Hopefully that works so I can bid some time for a trans rebuild. Pops out during down shift only. Kinda bummed, only 73K on the car. Just had a brand new clutch put in and IMS fix. Just had to vent.

Good luck with the gbox mod.

I installed one while my trans was out last month. I wasn't popping out or anything, even with 190,000 km on the clock, but I always felt that 2nd wasn't landing quite right so I did the mod as a preventative.

Hope it works for you - please report back.

I thought this was only an issue with the Turbo gearboxes?

I had a similar problem with my 2nd gear popping out although it usually occurred when shifting from 1st to second. I could tell when it was going to pop out because it didn't feel fully in-gear and I could usually catch it before the gears started grinding.
The problem would only occur when the transmission was cold though.

I ordered the Gbox mod and installed it when my mechanic was replacing my IMS. My mechanic was sceptical given the part looked almost identical to the one it replaced. But I immediately noticed a difference and it feels like 2nd gear is a little deeper. I haven't had it pop out since and I'm 95% sure the problem has been solved. I won't be 100% sure until December when it gets cold enough to know for sure.

Ah, I guess that was kind of rude of me. Sorry.

I noticed a subtle difference in the throw to 2nd. Not huge, but the feeling that it needed to go that little bit further is gone.

I have to say though that I installed new RS motor mounts and a LWFW at the same time, so everything feels different (better). It's a bit hard to isolate the effect of the detent.

I think that's why my head wasn't so quick to post my experience.

Regards this (not) being a Turbo issue only, I first heard of this back in 2002. A couple of club members were autocrossing a brand new Boxster S and they were popping out. At the time, the dealer was refusing warranty because their autocross times were being posted on the club website. They were pissed. IIRC they sold the Porsche and dropped out of the club because of that.

There was no $150 fix at the time.

Good luck.

Well, I have the Gbox just waiting to install it and change the oil. Personally, I am not expecting it to fix the problem...but before a trans rebuild...figured I would at least give it a try.

I installed the GBox detent fix when upgrading my IMS bearing to solve a similar problem. When cold (only) my 2nd gear would occasionally pop out although it only occurred when shifting from 1st to 2nd. The problem would disappear when the car was warm.

I was sceptical that the GBox fix would make any difference, but I haven't seen the problem since. I'm 99% sure it fixed the problem and I'll know for sure after next winter.

The Gbox detent did work for me on my 99 C2. It is not just a turbo problem.

I am getting it installed Monday and will report back on if it fixed the problem. Getting an oil change done at the same time. Was hoping to get the cracked oil filler tube replaced but paying for labor on that is going to run over $300....I think I can live with the duct tape on it for now...no leaks or issues so far. I hate plastic for engine parts.
