Many shops have a minimum 1 hour labor charge. If it takes 10 mins or 60, it's the same price.

If the car was already there for work and he charged you an hour to change the air filter he should not be your indy anymore!

Yah I'd think the profit of the filter would be good enough. I guess picking up a screw driver to twist a few lock downs off costs $100 plus these days. Sick stuff getting hit for those prices for just an air filter. I imagine you are paying for his vacation.

Like Dharm said, if he was working on other things then you were likely taken advantage of. But, time is money. Doesn't really matter how simple or easy the job. He has to pay his mechanics.

You may have overpaid this time but see it as motivation to do the small jobs yourself the next time around and save the $$$

It took me no more than 10 seconds to find the procedure for air filter R&R (not my video)

It's also a good idea to clean your MAF sensor when you change your air filter.

It's faster and easier to change the air filter in your 911 than the one in your home air conditioning.

I did my air filter in 10 mins. First time. Only need Philips driver and watch youtube video. Filter is around $20 from pelicanparts. Cabin filter is also 5 min job and $25 or so part on- line.

Yeah, that's what I figured....I SHOULD have known better but...... On the upside, my new rear sumi's, the tie rod end and the alignment really improve the feel of the car!

Thanks guys.

It depends though, if he did a number, or even just some, of the other maintenance checks along with the air filter, such as checking and topping off battery level, topping off w/s washer fluid level, oil level, put the car up on a lift and check for leaks and broken cv boots, checked pollen filter, cleaned out radiators, checked 02 sensors and faults, then an hours worth of labor might not be that bad.

If he just undid the 6 or so screws and dropped in the air filter then it's a bit much.
