Default 1999 996 Porsche Key Purchase

I did searches on Rennlist, but haven't been able to find a thread talking about where I could buy another key for my 1999 996. Can any of you educate me on a source, and what it takes to get a matched key that will work with my current locks.

Thanks,
Gil

Dealer or Indy only. About $250-$300.

My dealer is wanting $350 for the key + 85 bucks to program it? Anyone know if you can program the key yourself?

Cannot program it yourself.
Try another dealer maybe save $50
Do not buy a key from anyone unless it has barcoded tag attached!!
You need a blank key, someone to cut it, and the dealer to program it.
No other options work.

There are actually three parts to the key and the costs depends on what you need to replace.

1. The key "shaft" itself. You can pick up a blank one of these fairly cheap. Then it needs to be cut. Some key shops can do this, a dealer can do this and there is a place where you take a picture of the key and send its to them and they cut it. This key will then go into the locks for the doors and ignition and will unlock the doors but requires the "pill" described nexta to start the car.

2. Each key has an immobilizer "pill" that is required to start the car. This pill is programmed to the immobilizer by the dealer. You can transfer the pill from an old key if you have it.

3. The remote key head. This is for using the remote locks, etc. This device is programmed to the car by the dealer and these go bad quite often(both of mine are bad so I am using the key in the door to unlock mine). These go for about $189 from the dealer. You can find them on eBay but be careful, don't buy a used one. You need the bar code tag for the remote to be programmed to the car. You see them being sold used and cheap but they usually don't have the code and are useless without it. You can get them for about $120 from Sunset, Sonnen or Suncoast. Then it has to be programmed to the car with a PST2 or PIWIS by the dealer. The local dealers around here charge about $159 (1 hour labor) and will code as many as you want for that as it is really only about 15 minutes or so to set up the system.

I would be careful about always using the key in the door to unlock / lock. Internal parts of the lock may not really be designed for constant use. If an internal component breaks, it may be a tow to the dealer to get in your car. Happened to a friend of mine.

Doug,

Thanks for the details on the key components. I wasn't aware of the "pill".

I had both key heads go bad with in weeks of each other...guess the are programmed to last exactly 10 yrs. So even with original keyfobs youre looking at almost 300?
My solution has been leaving car open all the time....
Thanks for info.

Can I use a 2 or 3 button key remote for a 1999 Carrera? (one button) For some reason the newer remotes are much cheaper. I understand the other buttons will not function but curious if I MUST order a 1 button remote.

I just did order the key with transponder here for 45 pounds. They claim they can cut the key from an image. I will get it in a week or so.

You cannot be serious! You really believe this? You do realize that before electronics all cars unlocked this way?

Do you think your car will dissolve in the rain also?

Yes, you can use the 2 or 3 button remotes. The other button(s) won't be programmed. Just make sure the remote head you buy has the key code with it. Useless without it.
