I have a 2002 996 C2 Cabriolet with 32k mi and it rattles like nobody's business with the top up. I was wondering if anyone has attempted to tighten or isolate anything in their tops to resolve this.
I have a 2000 C4 cab that has its own share of rattles, but none of them are coming from the top. At 120k, my suspension is due for another refresh and I suspect that doing that will eliminate most of the rattles. I would have someone drive you around in your car and sit in the back and attempt to isolate where the noises are coming from. Incidentally, my hardtop rattles a bit on big bumps. Also, the windscreen is notorious for making noise when down. I usually remove mine when I am not using it.
I have a couple of rattles in the dash, but my top is quiet and tight. Check all the seals and weather stripping, the locking mechanism, and any loose joints in the support structure.
Also make sure it's the top. I had a rattle that was driving me nuts and it sounded like something in the top. Turns out it was an old garage door opener clipped to the visor. Doh! A new opener fixed the problem.
Btw. All my rattles disappear with the top down, but that's just because the ambient noise of top down driving drowns them out.
Check to be sure that the two tabs that engage the sockets near the outside edges of the header still have the plastic covers on them. I had one break off and the top rattled LOUDLY on that side.
check the oval access tabs on cover for the hook mechanism that engages the top to the windshield. These little tabs rattled like crazy for me. A bit of hot glue fixed it.
