Default 996 c4s ppi results and concerns

I have been searching for the right C4s for months. Colors and options had to be just right. Found one with 55k.

the car had 2 rms repairs in the past (most recently 5k miles and two years ago). The car definately sits around often.

My indy found a leak/seap out of bellhousing during PPI. Owner took it to the dealer that did the RMS and they agreed to redo it. Well I got a phone call yesterday. The took the tranny, clutch and FW out to realize the RMS is bone dry. The leaks was coming from between case halves. Right at the bottom. It is a small leak, I saw pictures of it.

Dealer says they have only seen this once before on a 996. they are looking at about $7k in labor plus parts to reseal the motor. They also recommend not to do it and drive the car as is.

I am getting cold feet on this car. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I would walk away. There are other cars out there.

As a recent 996 buyer, I can attest to the strong desire to overlook flaws as a means of getting your car sooner rather than later. Fight the urge. Your car is out there, keep looking.

You're walking away from a nice car because of a small oil leak? That's what we call a bargaining chip. Knock a few thou off of the price and run with it!

That's too vague of a diagnosis... what exactly was leaking??? Because if it's the IMS, and you don't own the car, and it hasn't imploded yet... then that would be good news for you. You could negotiate big time! They can do the re-fit and what not, and you can have a super car in the end...

You have a dilema. Use the faults as a bargaining chip as previously advised or walk away. I mean if you could bargain and after the work was complete you still won 5000K on the deal against other 996 of that year and status, then I would go for it. Otherwise, personally I would not walk away. I would run like the devil lol. I know it must be a heart break for you seeing the one you want up for sale but there are lots out there so don't buy and then think down the road, I wish, I should have. Go shopping elsewhere. Thats my final thoughts on the matter and good luck.

Leaking case halves is probably about 50 hours of work not including parts. Certainly a substantial job if you want to fix it.

I just bought an 04 CS Cab (pics coming this weekend before anyone asks!) after searching for sometime - I would walk away from any car that gives you that 'vibe' it took awhile but I found the perfect one. Are you in So Cal?

I feel somewhat the same too. How do the clutch and pressure plate look like? How about the AOS? You may be able to slap on new clutch and/or AOS now for just the parts cost since all the labor getting there is out of the way, depends on how comfortable you are living with the small leak, you can work out a good price to take advantage that the transmission out at the moment.

Same with the IMS bearing, you could save 10 hours of labor charges if you negotiate successfully!

thats awesome!!

I found out that the car is on its third RMS actually. It also has the IMS serviced in the past. All in all, the tranny was out of the car four times. I think the engine has some sort of a flaw to require three RMSs and have a leaky case by 55k miles. Pcar dealership said that they have only seen one other 996 with a leaky case in the past.

The owner is not negotiating at all on the car. I don't think he understand the severity of the deal. My indy also quoted me 50 hours of labor plus parts.

Thankfully I insisted on an independent PPI even though the owner did not want to. My guys saved me a bunch.

I am looking for a guards red or speed yellow C4s with manual. Sport seats are preferred.
