drive or fly?
been planning to drive the 996 from cleveland to charlotte for 2 days of meetings followed by a day of golf. supposed to leave tomorrow a.m. at about 6:30 am. problem is a huge noreaster is supposed to come inland as far as southern west virginia and it looks like 100 miles or so of my route could have 2-4" of snow and the 996 has summer tires... is it nuts to try to do this? should i suck it up and fly instead?

Looks like a big nasty storm. Fly this time and plan another trip in the 996 later.

kept watching the weather and decided to make the drive... snow on Monday stayed just east of my route, so, got real lucky with no accumulation on I-77.
ride back last night through the West Virginia turnpike was awesome. Drove about 100 miles or so with a B7 Audi S4 who apparently was very confident in his radar detector. was my first real trip in the 996 and was so nice to get a feel for how it works in the curves.

A few days before Christmas some years ago I got caught in a bad snow/ice storm in Ft. Smith AR and drove from there up to Joplin MO and on up to Butler MO before I dared leave the main highway to pull over and take a break. The car was slathered in snow/slush.
From when I left the motel at around 9am to after dark I blinked maybe once. I was in my Boxster with summer tires and I made it but I drove at best under 25mph and sometimes quite a bit slower the whole way.
Never again. (Though more recently I drove 40+ miles on I-40 in my Turbo oni new (under 1K miles) summer tires through a real bad snowstorm but made it through unscathed by driving under 30mph (I followed an empty big rig the whole way).)
Either find a way to avoid the storm (at least the snow/ice parts -- and hail can be a car killer too!) or fly. (Though chances are the storm will play heck with the airline flight schedules.)
Sincerely,
Macster.

If you had to ask the question then you know the sensible answer here. Play safe and fly if the airports are open. And most of all....good luck and safe journey. I know it's a bummer but you have all summer to drive safely in your beloved 996
WHOOPS sorry I see you decided to drive after all.. You Mad Impetuous fool haha.
