Default 2002 911 C2 Starter Head Scratcher

I removed a failing starter from my 2002 911 C2 today. The job was much more difficult than advertised because the "hard to get to" bolt was torqued in pretty well, so I had to remove the alternator to get a better angle at the stubborn bolt. Still too tough. However, a lot of heat application did the trick and out came the starter. The feeling of a quick victory was shattered when I compared the new starter to the one I just removed. The two starters were totally different.

The starter I removed has the short shaft and the new starter has the long shaft (below).

At first I thought, "Knucklehead! I ordered the wrong starter from Pelican". A quick review of Pelican.com and other sites revealed I ordered the correct starter. A little more research led me to believe I had removed a 99-2001 or 2005 starter from my engine. How could this be?

Well, the car I purchased had a replacement rebuilt engine installed prior to purchase. The previous engine had an IMS issue. For a moment I thought the replacement motor was actually a 99-01 model. I quick check of the engine serial number revealed the following - M96/0566201???. I could not read the last 3 digits and knew it didn't matter, because the 662 portion reveals it is an 02 engine. The contradiction is apparent. I am stumped.

Any ideas?

Mark

You ordered the wrong starter or they sent you the wrong one. Please post the part numbers.

I think that the motor with the longer shaft is for turbo and gt3.

Send the new starter with a photo of the old one back to Pelican and ask them to send the replacement. Or send both starters and ask them for an exchange for the one they see. They are probably the same price.

That really sucks, but the suggestions above are good ones. GL

The bottom one is definitely for a Turbo which is a totally different engine and trans.

Thanks for the advice.

Looks like they (Bosch or Pelican) mis-labeled a Turbo starter #996-604-107-02-M14 as a Carerra starter #SR-0429-X-M14. I will arrange for an exchange on Monday.
