It's not a common problem, unless you live in a very dry climate and leave your car in the sun. Even then, regular applications of conditioner keep the leather in good nick. It's tough stuff.

My wife's '99 Boxster has full leather and looks great. My poll response is based on that.

Yeah I have had 4 Porsche's, all older than my 996 and they never had the issue I have had with it.

Agree its about proper maintenance, like everything!

Sounds like you have significant shrinkage...like a frightened turtle.

Could it be from a leaking windshield?

I guess you could have a pin-hole leak that might be letting steam hit the dash in that area.

I have a 97 Boxster with full leather and the dash is still "like new", but it spends most of its time garaged and we don't have the intense sun here in Toronto that you might have. I don't use any cleaners or conditioners on it or the door panels. I've read that the leather used in these areas is treated (pre-shrunk?) and that it may be damaged by absorbing conditioners, but I can't confirm if this is accurate. I do however use conditioner / cleaner on the seats.
I have read of others with the leather dashes with similar damage as yours. I have also seen photos of damage after the leather has been accidentally soaked with water and shrinks after drying.

At this point it may be worth trying to reduce or halt the damage by using a quality hide food or conditioner to rejuvenate the leather.

Mine looked very similar to yours before I had it recovered.

I think my '99 is perfect but after your pictures I'm going to look it over when I get in my car tonight.

I use armer-all leather care on mine.
