Took car in for maintenance (see "price of oil change" post) and had shop check out my failing climate control screen. Getting bad enough that I can no longer see the "down vent arrow." I'm a purist, or I would pay the $53 for the DIY screen with "new" icons. Any reason I shouldn't be able to (a) buy one of the current eBay Boxster climate control boxes for my '03 C4S; (b) unscrew and open box and remove LCD; (c) perform DIY on my own screen?

I simply can't have a screen that doesn't say "Manuell." Not acceptable.

This is what I'm thinking too.
If YOU are one of those people throwing away an LCD screen, please PM me before you do!

I need one too! Is this a common problem? I did a search and didn't come up with anything for "sundowning".

I'm thinking of buying the DIY repair kit on eBay. I need to search around and see what the end product looks like.

Yes.

Didn't come up with anything for "sundowning".
"In medicine, sundowning, also known as sundown syndrome, is a syndrome involving the occurrence or increase of one or more abnormal behaviors in a circadian rhythm. Sundowning typically occurs during the late afternoon, evening, and night, hence the name. It occurs in persons with certain forms of dementia and psychosis."

More apropos to this discussion however is:
"Sunset or sundown is the daily disappearance of the Sun below the horizon in the west as a result of Earth's rotation."

If your LCD looks like the setting/rising sun, you can call it whatever you want. Sunrising might be more appropriate, since the lesion gets bigger, not smaller with time.

I need to search around and see what the end product looks like.
It's been posted here before, and on the distributer's website (search ModuleMaster). You'll lose the German "manuell," and the icons are different (recirc changes, vent icon changes), but apparently it will work just fine, and it's an easy DIY or so I'm told.

The other option is go with an eBay sale of the whole unit for about $200; still cheaper than dealer's price obviously. I'm considering this.

Here's the DIY over at Renntech (login required)

I've been thinking of doing this for a while, but hate to give up the OEM look.

I just replaced the LCD screen in my HVAC unit. Took me about 20 minutes start to finish, including removal and reassembly in the dash. Very easy fix. Was a bit confusing since the picture of the metal cage did not look like mine. The kit was supposed to include the alcohol pads - none included. I skipped that step and it apparently didn't matter. The instructions talk about wearling cotton inspection gloves. I couldn't find any locally so I was just super careful, handling the LCD with the wrapper, washing my hands well first, etc. That didn't seem to matter. I think for $77.50 with shipping 9xauto should have thrown in the little alcohol pads and the cotton gloves. I'm very pleased with the new display - much nicer than the big sunsets I put up with since purchase of the C4S 1.5 years ago.

Update for posterity:
If you want the original factory look. I'd highly recommend this...
http://shop.914rubber.com/LCD-Produc...m1plqscsfapp06

The guy at 914Rubber.com makes replicas of the original LCD displays. They are perfect, I have one in my car. (which is why I have a spare Audi display)
