Default question for mechanically inclined regarding an IMS/RMS "window"

my thoughts on the IMS is you either buy a car with the upgraded IMS or you just factor it into the purchase price. no big deal and as i've mentioned in other posts, the 996 seems to be a cheap ride compared to other german cars and i couldn't be happier with mine!

i was thinking about this the other day and my question is this:
is it possible for the bell housing of the tranny to be cut out at the bottom (with a cover of some sort made to protect the hole from the elements) in such a way to create a "window" so that the owner can occasionally spot check the RMS and IMS instead of having to drop the tranny? would this weaken the housing in any way? is this just a stupid idea?

i think this would be especially helpful for the boxster owners who suffer the bad RMS issue.

I look forward to the day when we can add nanobots to the oil that can send a status report to the onboard computer.

Uh, this would have to fall into the stupid idea category. Aren't you forgetting about the flywheel on a manual trans car blocking any view?

Just get the IMS Guardian and it will monitor it for you...

just got back from a spirited drive...man these cars are nice!!...clutch/trannys suspension are smooth as silk.

during the summer when i would take my 356 for the occasional drive to the bay area, if it was during the day when i got to the siskiyou mountains in the heavy heat, i would have to drive in the shadow of tractor trailers to avoid high temps...it really worked and kept the temps low enough to continue up the mountains.
