Still a little at odds on what needs to come out to pull the regulator upwards...
See the pics and let me know if I am missing something:

Nut 3 access
For Nut 3 - there is access hole down there (covered with some rubber cap if I remember correctly)
I had to use 2 X 1/2" extenders + long socket on my ratchet to get to it (i think its a 12mm socket - not sure)
tip: - smear something sticky on the socket to secure the nut and leave the extender lying there until you are ready to put it back on, this way you will not risk dropping the stupid thing in there (it will take forever to fish back).
Once removed - the part is now loose, just be sure to secure the electrical connector with bungee cord once removed and just wiggle gently until you find the correct angle for the plate+motor to slide out. (be prepared to loose some skin in the process).
good luck!
I'm off now to replace my worn rear control arm bushings (will it never end..)

Thanks for the response....
I assume you need to move the top up to clear the acces hole, as the cylinder appears to be in the way..
I will repost with more pics once I get to it....I should be getting the car back from the body shop by this Friday and hopefully will make another attempt this weekend

Just one more tip - the 3rd nut is removed from an adjustable stud !
you will have to turn it to maximum closed position in order to slide the part out (clearance) and than extend it once the part is back in.
(no roof component removal is necessary!)
