groovzilla,
here is how my coin holder works. it snaps in with clips toward the passenger side - first picture.
next - in the console at the bottom of the opening, toward the shifter is a gear - it is slow to turn and makes the door open slowly.
last - the coin holder top has a toothed gear that mates with the gear in the console
maybe something got stuck between the holder and the console? i say look carefully, and give it a wiggle. it will probably pop out?
good luck

Funny story about this one.
PPI revealed the e-brake dash light wouldn't come on. Dealer quoted $400 to fix. Thank you but no.
Also, the PO I bought my car from said "ash tray doesn't work anymore or has a mind of it's own".
I figured ok, cheap fix right! Well, after removing the center console/ashtray/etc. I literally found about $20 in mixed change. Tons of quarters stuffed just about everywhere you could imagine. Jackpot! Removed all of the loose change, reinstalled everything.
Ash tray worked perfectly, and the e-brake light started to work. LOL.
I considered the ash tray delete, will get around to it some day.

I grew up doing day trips at Butternut and long weekends/vacations at Stratton. The Berkshires are a straight shot up Rt 7 for me -- 2 hrs door to door. Now, it's time to get both of my kids into it. My daughter is already talking about the upcoming season!

i was born in nyc but grew up in westchester ny. when i was about 12 years old my parents bought stock in jiminy peak.
jiminy peak owners wanted to expand the ski area and offered a great stock deal for families. the parents skied free for life and kids until 18 yrs old. this would have been 1972 and i remember the purchase price was $2800.
i skied almost every weekend taking the 2.5 hr drive on the taconic st parkway. my dad set our trailer in hancock mass and we'd stay the weekends. great old memories. the "post" sisters were twin freestyle competitors that used to train at jiminy. i skied with them several times when i was about 17. i competed in some freestyle events.
*if you guys get a chance you have to ski whistler bc...incredible resort with the best snow and absolutely huge bowls/etc....my friend sent me this video shot on his phone after our trip in feb this year. hard to believe i can still move my bones at 53 after 3 knee surgeries:
