i went from 911sc to '96 993 C4 to '95 993 C2 then to 1990 964...reason simple:
having owned over 15 911's(early cars, s, and sc's) i thought it would be cool to have the 993 because of the beautiful design. i'm not an aggressive driver but enjoy long road trips thru the mountains at sane speeds...i enjoyed the 993 but it didn't have the early car feel.
when i purchased my 964 i got the early 911 feel combined with some better comforts like heating, fan and better tranny.
**if you decide to go 993, because of the dreaded CEL/SAI issues associated with the 993, make sure you buy a 1995 version so the emission inspection won't be an issue.(if the SAI ports get clogged in a 1996 or newer 993 it WILL be detected by the emissions plug in)

I like to explain it like this....
Lear Jets are really cool, really fast, comfortable and elite - a P-51 Mustang is also really cool, really fast (though not AS fast) not so comfortable and elite....
some people will always want to fly the P-51, others will always be lured to the Lear Jets....both respect each other's reasons, both would be happy to fly the other guys, but both fly theirs because it speaks to them........
so I drive a 25 year old Porsche, and dream of a 35-45 year old one
That's kinda how I explain it

This little dry sumper was at the dealership. I'm looking at a black 997 that's just what I want, but this little car keeps popping into my head. If it were a coupe I'd realy be interested. I want to turn an older 911 into a race car someday.

I'm thinking $32-33k but time will tell. If a VW/Porsche dealer (not that many combos) will give me $31 on trade, I'll take it to save the $1,500 on tax for a GTI. Then the hunt for an air cooled will begin.
Luckily there there are 2 VW/Porsche dealers in my state, so we'll see what they want to do.
Check out this crazy asking price...granted very low miles: http://ucl.porsche.de/ucl/plsql/usa/...&pnr_=2&lnr_=9
