Question: Dension Gateway lite vs Gateway 500
I have a 2003 996 that has a stock CDR-23 radio/CD player with no PCM nor CD changer. I know both units will work. I wonder if anyone know which unit makes more sense for my car, pricewise and funtionality wise given the CDR-23cannot display text?
Also, does it offer much better sound quality over FM modulator interfaces?
TIA

Feel free to email me anytime. We have spent many years as the primary distributor for the Dension Gateway 500 for iPod integration (and USB, Aux, Bluetooth) for Porsche, and it will work fine with the CDR23. Yes, the CDR is the weak link in that it is not text capable, and you won't have Bluetooth, but you CAN integrate iPod directly to the fiber optic loop with the Gateway 500, and for less than $500.
We have the unit on our Order page and it is in stock right now (we have new inventory about every 2 weeks), and we can support you like no other vendor, with our time tested and well proven history, we have documentation to get you through the installation on your own, or through a pro installer if you prefer.
The difference b/w the Lite and the GW500 is night and day, and for the money, you are better off with the Gateway 500. The lite does NOT come with the ipod cable, and when you figure in the cost of the cable and the Lite unit, you are within a few bucks of the Gateway 500 (at our insanely low selling price), which applies to many other makes/models and therefore has a wider net if you wanted to sell it or upgrade from your current Porsche.
Again, email me anytime with questions.

I will echo what Eric said. He was tremendous help when I ordered mine and his support after the sale was second to none. The 500 is the unit to get.
I completed a full DIY with pics as well for anybody wanting to integrate this with the CDR23.

Thanks, Dell. Yea, I saw your write up a long time ago and it was awesome! Will be handy when I start the install.

Forgot to add that my first unit died shortly after installing it. I called Eric and asked him what to do (i.e., ship back to Dension?) and he said absolutely not that he would take care of it. He overnighted me a replacement with a return shipping label. How many vendors would do that?

i have had this unit in my car for about 4-5 years and it has worked like a Charm with my PCM2... Just the Firmware Updates are a bitch to do, never seem to work out proper for me and i have to do it several times to Update it.

I want to ditch my CDR23 completely; I've gotten sick of the click of death/STOP problems and lack of mp3 support. While the nav upgrades look cool and all, I just don't have that sort of budget (or time.) What are the options for a MOST-compatible direct-replacement plug-in for the head unit?
Also: I don't have an ipod. I just want to be able to plug in a USB stick or CD-R full of mp3s like I can in any $50 head unit. And am quite pissed at Porsche at their decision to go with MOST, but that's another issue...
