Default CEL & CAI

I had a K&N cold air intake installed 5 weeks ago on my 99 996 C2. Have been driving daily and took to Mosport for PCA DE's in September and last weekend. Don't know if any horsepower gain but sure sounds great when floored at 4000 rpm!

However, on Monday my CEL came on and hasn't gone off. My mechanic is away on holidays so the car is just sitting in the driveway looking dejected. Any words of wisdom?

Probably an over oiled filter that may have damaged your MAF. You can go to your local autoparts store to have them read the CEL. Your options are to try to clean the MAF with electronics cleaner or purchase a new MAF.

Sounds like a MAF or perhaps an intake leak.

Certainly have the codes read.

sorry -

but after that kit arrived....you opted to install it
pile of tin in a box and chop holes in the car so you could add a flimsy tin box with weather stipping from a hardware store wrapped around it????

- sorry man, there is NO way I wanted that flimsy looking POS in my car - returned mine

not trying to be mean, but those things suck and on top of it...you created yourself a chance to get a new MAF...have you price checked that little part...$250 ish

I know I am being an *** and many people have the K&N filter set up....and are happy... it didnt "do it" for me....

I've never seen or owned one of the oiled K&N setups, so I'll hold off judgement.

However, a couple weeks ago I did something dumb - tired to clean out my airbox when I was replacing my air filter. I must have gotten cleaner on the MAF itself by accident because when I started the car back up my CEL was on. The code was P0102.

There's a bench test you can run on the MAF pretty easily. Turn the key to the on position (don't even need to start the car), put a multimeter on the MAF and check the voltage. I can post details if you're feeling adventurous. Mine was way out of spec.

I figured my options were replacement (@ 300 bucks) or cleaning. I picked up a can of MAF cleaner at autozone, disassembled the whole thing and cleaned the MAF as good as I can. Now it's running like a champ. Total cost ~$6.

SWEET...love it when a $6 can of fix it in a can solves a $300 potential issue...

to the OP, you might try that! - then clean the K&N filter using the re-charge kit and then re-oil VERY SPARINGLY

might be your issue but you still need to get the code read and cleared - best of luck!!
(sorry to diss on the K&N set up)

OP- if you dont have a scanner, go to your local parts store and get the code pulled. See if its MAF related-

Glad it worked for you. Cleaning my MAF bought me about 3 weeks before it threw a CEL, so I replaced with a new MAF and no more CELs, and that was 3 years ago. "They" say over oiling kills the MAF,just be sure not to over oil your K&N.

I fought the CEL battle with my K&N CAI. Took it out and haven't had a problem since. It is staying on my garage floor where I left it. It sounded great, but not worth the hassle. I have been thinking about putting on the bypass pipes that came with my car....

shannah...put the by-pass pipes on, they will NOT throw a CEL and are really fun...for a day or two, easy to un-do and you can put them on again when you get the urge...if you were close to me I would show you how, takes about 30 minutes total after the first time (which takes about 1.5-2 hrs)

they are fun....and worth trying

Ivangene: Is it just the K&N CAI you don't like or all of them in general? Why?

Healey 1968: Please post your procedure. At this point I've got nothing to lose.

Thanks all for your input. Seems like the supposed benefit of the CAI's is up for debate!

In general, NEVER oil a K&N filter on a 911... if you insist on using the set-up, leave the filter un-oiled and get one of those micro-mesh (I don't recall the name) covers that go over the filter. Then, at least you won't have to worry about oil getting on the MAF, just dirt.

the Evoms system seems pretty OK but pricey!
there are filter you can put in the stock box that will help (forget the names)

but for the most part there is zero gain in the K&N other than sound...and the fact that the tin box and pile of hardware they send you looks exactly like some home brew set up, altering the car (drill holes) and the foam thing....to flaky for me

you can add a 3.6 filter assy like this
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...irbox-mod.html

but the stock filter is NOT restrictive in ANY way, so if not changing for sound...and there is NO HP gains (in fact there may be HP losses) plus risk to the MAF...all adds up to "no thank you"

hope this is helpful info

if you bought the car and it was on the car, you can land a stock set up for under $100 if you look around...for added sound drill large holes in the bottom of it - but keep in mind you are sucking in hot motor air and defeating the boxes design....

So Mike: You are not enjoying your car because you don't have a $50-$100 OBDII reader.
If you had one you could read the code and erase it and drive on.
You don't need to be at the mercy of some mechanic to read the code.
Get a scanner, Join Renntech.org, have access to all the codes for your car.
Get one and keep it in your trunk with a printout of the codes and you are good to go!

Send me a PM Mike. I have Durametric software on my laptop and an OB2 cable and can scan and read your codes for you as I live in Mississauga as well. If the CEL is steady and not flashing you can still drive your car short distances. It could be something not connected with the air cleaner. At this time of year it doesn't take much moisture to find a way into a crack on a coil that has seen heat all summer now that it's colder and wet.
