accident--some questions!!!
speculation at this point - but the point is the ins co doesnt know either so how can they be so damn sure the total cost of repairs that would be needed to pass a Porsche Tech thumbs up!!
The body shop is the final abitrator of what needs to be replaced.
Based on my experience with my Boxster both the front and rear bumper covers had to be replaced after my car was struck from behind at a stop light and the rear bumper cover damaged by the initial impact while the front bumper cover damaged from the impact my car had with stopped vehicle in front of my car. The impact speed from the vehicle hitting my car from behind was around 5mph so the impact speed wasn't that high. Neither cover showed any dents or other structural damage.
But the bumper covers are really not designed to withstand much impact, only to hide the parts that are: The bumper shock absorbers and the metal rail that connects them and is the real 'bumper'.
In my car's case the other driver's insurance company wanted the body shop to use a salvaged bumper cover and of course I objected but the body shop owner told me not to worry... his experience was that while insurance companies always insisted on this that the salvage bumper covers were often in worse shape than the damaged bumper cover.
Sure enough when a salvaged bumper cover came in it was clear to even the adjuster the bumper cover was not acceptable and a new cover was ordered.
I forget which end. The other end there was not even a salvaged cover available. So, a new front and rear bumper cover, although the front cover I had to pay half the cost because the front bumper cover suffered a minor crack years before when I hit some road debris.
Same thing -- kind of -- happened with my other car. The insurance company (mine in this case: I hit a deer and the deer was uninsured...) insisted on a salvaged passenger side headlight. The body shop looked around for one and found one offered for sale but the seller wanted money up front before he'd ship the headlight. No way said the body shop, we do not do business that way, and the insurance paid for a new headlight.
Sincerely,
Macster.
