Default Wheel Locks

Apparently, the old wheel locks that shipped with our 996s are known to be junk, and have been upgraded by Porsche! Over the weekend, I broke my wheel lock after I had changed over 3 of my tires to the winter set.

No matter all the "tricks" that people post on these things, it's pretty near impossible to remove these darned bolts without the key! (I tried all the "tricks", but failed...)

Brought it in to my local dealer and he pulled the bolts out (they obviously keep all wheel locks on hand), and replaced them with the new spec locks from the 997 - huge improvement, I can see that I won't have the same issue with the new set! Had I known, I would have replaced them sooner as preventive maintenance.

I am looking for a wheel key like the one i posted a pic of, but after reading your post i think i might just drive to the dealer. If you can can you put up a pic of the 997 wheel key I'm curious if the pattern is the same. Thanks.

I have replaced the locks set on every Porsche I have owner. Huge hassle to have the locks.

Send me 4 factory "Lug nuts" and I will send you all my locks and the key, I see no point to the locks... not a fan.

I have probably 2 complete sets of extra wheel bolts. Many of the local guys have grabbed 4 bolts to replace theirs. Totally worth it.

That's what i intend to do, for one i never leave my car out over night and secondly it's never parked long enough (except at work if and when i do drive it) or in a location to have wheels stolen. I just need a wheel key to remove my bolts.

Here's a picture of the new locks (Part No. 997-361-057-02), they are very different, but are obviously a much better design:

On the old design, the whole wheel has to turn on the basis of 6 "nibs", but on the new design, it is a whole bunch of splines.

trust me - if someone wants to steal your wheels, those locks are not going to stop them...toss em out and use a regular one

DUMB!

I don't think anyone will steal my wheels, but force of habit, I guess!

I will stop using wheel locks as soon as U.S. Customs stops making my kids (ages 9, 7, and 4) take off their shoes and empty their water bottles when flying back from Phoenix, if you get my drift!

Alright you gorillas.

Are you using an impact wrench on your locks?

Over-torquing? Torquing first or removing last?

Uh, perhaps I'm missing something here how do you know THAT key is going to fit YOUR wheel lock bolts?

I was told there are about 20 different lock/key patterns for these.
