Default M96 tool set

For those of you who are like me and do work on the M96 engines this is a pretty fantastic deal for this tools set.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_W0QQ...KQ3aMEWAXQ3aIT

A few weeks ago they were asking close to $500 for the set, and if you check with Baum Tools for a similar set it is close to $1,000. Heck the ZDmax cam timing tool is $216.

I am very tempted to buy one for my tool chest.

I just grabbed one, too good to pass up and there are only a couple left (may be more later but who knows). This listing by Baum Tools for a set without the piston pin tool priced at $989.55 was what pushed me over the line.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...item1c17f890c5

And if you combine there three sets from ZDmak you are still at $601.95 with shipping and you don't have the piston pin tool, the TDC tool and you have a different/simplified timing tool.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cam-S...item588f409c32

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Set-4...item588f3b4a0c

If you have a 3.6 engine here is the set of timing tools for the 3.6 for only $129, but it does not have all the hold down tools, etc.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...item3a6974bfa1

This seller has the same set of timing tools as the one I got but for $479.

I know i can look this up but what did you pay for his class and how would you rate it? Was it worth the money/time? I know you are building an engine now.

I'm just an enthusiast but would love to attend some time (assuming once he's done with the IMSG stuff and has time for them again).

I'm attending the Sept class. It's $799 and 3 days long. I'm really looking forward to it, hence the purchase of these tools.

Received the set. Quality is quite good. Better timing/allocation tool than than the ZDmak tools as this one functions just like the OEM tool. The other pieces are well made. I will make them available for others to use on a rental/deposit basis. Not tools that you use everyday (for us DIY's) but really handy if you need them.

The cam timing tools for the 3.6 are entirely different. Here is a link for the set of timing tools.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...item3a6a19c40b

At $129 it is sort of a no brainer to buy these if you are going to be timing a 3.6.

However, note that this kit only has the timing tools. It does not have the external cam holders, the internal cam holders, the piston wrist pin tools or the alignment tool for the rods. So if you are just trying to set the cam timing on a 3.6 this is a good kit at an affordable price. But if you need to remove the cam cover, the cams or the heads, or if you are going to split the cases then you need the other tools. There are a couple more sets of the tools I bought at the same price ($349) so you could get both sets for less than $500.

Well, I couldn't let this deal go.

Another two sets popped up on ebay, and I snapped up one of them in anticipation of a possible future rebuild. Or perhaps if I don't end up doing the rebuild I shouldn't have any trouble reselling the kit, it is such a great deal as Doug pointed out.

Here is the last one listed for now, in case anyone is interested.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=330611386767

Again this is just for a 3.4L 996 (or Boxster up to 2002), it is not for the 3.6L engine.

Thanks Dharn, good info, thanks for taking the time, helps me plan the rebuild that will occur someday bacause the car is definately a keeper, I am slowly assembling the tools and parts needed. The Targa cost $100k 4 years ago with 70k klms and is now worth about $60k with 140k klms on it and I probably will never again be able to buy another one so it will stay and get old with me... and like me will need some rebuilds...

Sorry, if I'm dense, Phil, but is this timing kit all I need to lock the cams in place to do the IMS on my 2002 3.6 C2? Thanks!

You don't need this tool kit to lock the cams for the IMS bearing upgrade. LNE offers a tools kit for this work that has all you need to lock the cams and is about half the price. This kit has far more than you need for that.

Thanks, Doug! But I assume I would need it to replace the timing chain guides?
