Default Mixing different viscosity oils but same brand?

Hi guys,

My service is coming up soon. Just wondering if it is possible to mix 4l of 15w50 and 5l 5w40 motul oil together. 15w50 seems abit too thick.
Ps: not looking for oil war, just need some feedback and opinions.
Cheers

I've done that with Mobil 1 in the past, mixing 2 different viscosities, had no issues that I'm aware of.

You can mix them with no issues.

Ok to mix with no side effects (except the IMS explosion )

My mix, what I call the "summer cocktail":
6 quarts of Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W-40
4 quarts of Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40
The winter cocktail has approximatesly the reversed quantities.

No no ...

Yes i am changing oils but i was just wondering if it was ok to change 4L to 5w40 and 5L to 15w50. All new oils.

My idea of doing this is to have a viscosity not as thick as 15w50 and at the same time not as thin as 5w40? If that makes sense. hahaha.

This is a very common thing to do with the m96 engine. Look on 6speedonline or at bob the oil guy. They have some info on the proper mix of difference viscosities.

Also, Let us know how it goes. I've been thinking about doing the same.

I run 5w40 redline. I've heard that the Mobil1 formula that is current is not as good as their past formula. They do not have many of the additives they use to but this could be just forum info. Either way I went redline and have been pretty happy but could be happier! haha

Mobil 1 tech support: 1-800-662-4525. Personally, I would go by my engine builder's recommendations. It might be interesting/surprising to hear from ExxonMobil.

Though I'm sure no one cares, Porsche states in its approved oil list documentation that approved oils are miscible.

There is no reason to when switching from one approved oil to another approved oil to perform any kind of engine 'flush' before filling the engine with the different approved oil.

As for topping up, Porsche says that ideally the same oil used to fill the engine should be used to top up the engine but any approved oil can be used.

15w-50 is not even an approved oil. Why you would want to run it is beyond me.

Motul is a Group V (ester based) oil and the word is it is a pretty darn good oil.

In short I'd not advise you to mix the oils.

If you are going to do anything give the 15w-50 away and buy enough Motul oil to do an oil change.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Seems consistent with Porsche history... I would think that the miscibility requirement goes back to 993 and earlier "oil cooled" cars where oil changes did not replace all the oil in the system, just that which could be drained from the crank case. The "new" oil would then be blended with that remaining in the oil lines and oil cooler.
