Tony,

Used engines can be had on craigslist anywhere from $6K to $10K FOB. 3.4L being more expensive than 3.6L. Refresh can cost around $700 to $800 in parts. Clutch will add another $500. Flywheel extra. LNE bearing, RMS, cam pads, water pump and AOS (air oil separator).

Shops will charge around 8-10 hrs for the install. People here have dropped engines on their own in 4-6 hrs.

If you want to keep the car. Jake's 3.6 engine from LN engineering start at $18K is what I have heard.

Thanks - I'll forward this info' to a friend.

His mechanic said 'Unfortunately, there is a lot of metal debris in the oil filter..Most likely the IMS bearing has failed(cant be sure at this moment).'

You mean, Jake's Engine from Flat 6 Innovations... Right?
:-)

Used 3.4s that are worth a hoot are getting really hard to find.

You can generally find a good used 3.4 for $4-7k. Try Porsche dismantlers.

My dealer is quoting me $14k for a 3.4l factory crate motor for my 2001 six speed coupe. At last check a month ago, there were 3 of them in the US.

The guy who owns dCAuto, arguably the largest Porsche dismantler in the US, told me last fall that any M96 is getting hard to find. He gets several calls each day looking for them.

Would a brand new one still need the LN IMS bearing or are they putting in something better at the factory now in the 3.4L?
