Hi, I have a 1999 C4 with 117K miles. I am on my original Engine mounts. I have read that if one side of the muffer is lower than the other, it is time to replace the engine mounts.
The question I have is how much lower? I just measured mine and the driver side is 1/4 of inch lower. Does this mean I should replace my engine mounts?
I also have increased vibration at over 70mph. Could a failed engine mount cause this?
I just replaced my 96K mile motor mounts yesterday from stock to RS. The stock mounts had cracks in the rubber but was holding the motor well. It was a pain breaking the nut loose. Ferd and I with a 18 inch pipe extension on a breaker bar...
One muffler sitting lower could be a motor mount, or it could be just that the tips are misaligned.
I've seen it both ways with two buddies each with one tip lower than the other. In one case it was a bad mount, In the other case it was a misalignment.
Crawl underneath and you'll see that the tips are clamped on with a spherical joint.
At 117K miles your mounts could be getting a bit tired. Stock mounts are cheap enough. It certainly can't hurt to replace them and the response to changes in throttle position will feel much better.
Dang......mine came right off. How do you like the ride now?
To the OP.......not sure if the vibration over 70 is a mount though. Might be a tire balance issue.
If one of the muffler is sagging, I think it may be a motor mount failing. At least worth looking into.
I only spent about 45 miles driving with the RS mount. I noticed it is a 964 part number. Broke a 9" extension socket trying to get the second stock mount loose. Shifting is more precise and the car feels edgier. I am running full stiff on PSS9s though. I got sick of getting the bobble from the front going up hill on full throttle when it was on 4/5.
Other work done was 2nd gear detent from GBox, oil change and steering wheel replacement. Ferd performed magic taking the detent out as it was still vacuum packed with tranny oil and would not come out with a magnet.
3/8" drive???
use BIGGER sockets/extensions (1/2" drive)
Yes 3/8.... I'm not up there yet with the 1/2 inventory.... Only socket/wrench I have with 1/2 is for the lug nuts to torque it.... It's those Chicago cars that are a b*tch to work on.... When I start mess in with the bigger stuff, I may be forced to pull the trigger.
Ferd, the bigger stuff makes it easy for "old men" to loosen ALL bolts... I am getting old and see my 1/2" drive stuff getting used more frequently, I seem to get less worn out, tired, sore. Money well spent...
Def a 964 part... My install is up next. Got it from Suncoast.
This is off the Carnewal site. I assumed the P93 is the 993.
"Rennsport Motor Mounts for P96/P97
These are the motor mounts from the P93 Rennsport version combined with the correct hardware so these motor mounts can be installed in any P96. They replace the original motor mounts without any further modification.
Due to the reduced amount of rubber in the motor mount, they are an excellent upgrade for the standard or hard rubber motor mounts. With these motor mounts, the whole car will feel more solid and the shifting will be much more precise.
A must for cars with lowered suspension.
