NEW BATTERY INSTALL - Duralast 48-DL [autozone] March 2011
[cross post from GT3 forum]
Just installed a new battery. My old Moll OEM appeared to be from the middle of 2006, so it was almost 5 years old. I ended up going for the Autozone Duralast 48-DL, which was in stock for $92 [$104 without core].
48-DL is 4.5 lbs lighter and is identical fit.
Install was a breeze. 2/10.
1) Power to the car [probably don't need it but I used it anyway].
2) Unhook vent, battery terminals and mounting bracket at bottom of battery.
3) Slide battery towards passenger seat.
4) Tilt front of battery a bit and remove.
5) Put new battery in the middle/left of the tray, with just a little angle [they have a lip on the bottom that has to fit under a ridge.
6) Slide to driver's side of tray.
7) Reattach vent, terminal leads and bracket. I pulled out the adapter from the previous vent line and inserted the line into the hose that came with the battery.
8) Put cover back on and remove backup power source.
9) Good to go.

IIRC, after long enough the ECU loses power (need to reteach the car how to drive), clock loses power, the radio does as well. Plus, can't get into trunk/engine bay and no courtesy lights work.
If you don't have the radio code and haul the battery a long way, you need a trickle or a backup.
But I could simply be spreading old wive's tales.

got the 48-dl and put it in this am. It uses a different hold down hole than my OEM Moll but fits well and very secure. Autozone counter guy "guaranteed" its the wrong battery BTW and wanted me to get the $190 one (Porsche tax?). I did compared the 48 and the one their computer shows and they are identical in size...
Price is up to $130 (with NY tax) these days.
