thanks redridge!!

One question before I start to strip everything out of the engine.
With the engine out of the car, I checked visually the cam timing again. On Bank 2 (passenger side) both cams seem to be at the right timing (notches vertical when on TDC for cyl 1), on Bank1 the intake cam is also at the right timing but the exhaust is not. I visually checked the valves through the hole of the exhaust manifold and it seems not to be any damage to the exhaust valves (I checked both banks).

so here the question. Can I take our the cam cover and realign only the exhaust cam?

thanks

Ok, engine came out and I diassembled the head on bank 1 (bank 2 was in perfect timing, so no ned to strip that one). Fortunately, there seems not to be any damage to valves, cylinder or anything else...so, I am ready to reassembly.

I found that the top of the engine on Bank #2 was flooded with oil, so I guess there has to be a leak somewhere there. I will take care of that one after reassembling the head, timing the cams and installing the valve cover.

Hope I don't get trapped in any other while-in-there stuuf..I need the car back on the road!!

Cheers

What damage did you find??
Cam timing procedures vary greatly between 3 chain and 5 chain engines. How many chains does your engine have? If its a 5 chain the intake/ exhaust lobe separation is easier to remedy. You are going to have a hard time doing this without the tools.

Jake,\

It is a 3 chain. I didn't find any dmage at all. I diassembly the head and everything look perfect. I was even surprise for the low carbon buildup that I found on the cylinder (for the 40,000 miles on the engine).
I bought the tools, but my problem is that the factory manuals only explain the procedure for the 5-chain. Could you help me with the 3-chain?

pic of the intake cam. I'll assume I have to loose the bolt shown in the picture in order to be able toadjust timing, after installing the exhaust cam and chain guide (and the tool?), is this right?

It can't be it's got a wooden handle, it's got to be the Alfa Romeo suspension adjuster.
